Actually no, they have the same meaning, they really are just different spellings. I've seen both used in both contexts. Usually I think of theatre as the art and theater as the place, though, I agree.

I've never heard that before, man, and I don't believe it to be true. I know for a fact that "axe" is originally the British form of the word "ax". You can look it you so choose. "Axe" shows up a lot in American literature and in every day life to replace "ax", but it was originally the British spelling.

A lot of words that end in "er" in the US are "re" in the UK. Perhaps you use more that you never knew.
