| People live a cushy life and it's dulling our predatory nature and intuition. I think being in Alaska has given you that view. Curious bears tend not to follow people in my experience, if they do then you're not taking the proper precautions with identifying yourself in the wilderness. But I don't live in Alaska and can't really say for your bears. in northern michigan around manistee theres a huge national forest and i lived up there for some time and even now i go up there every year for at least a week just to camp, the people are few and far between until you get into towns and around the forest preserve theres very few people. and the animals up there are more curious than anything else. ive been up around there and seen bears who have seen me and have just gone about their business, they have plentiful food and arent going after humans and if they do happen to wander into camps they can always be scared off with little damage unless its a mother and her cubs. a more interesting story was a black bear running down one of the 2-tracks being chased by a yapping boston terrier. and the same curiosity and applicable non-agressiveness goes for the other animals up there, wolves have a huge population there and going through the forest even outside of camp grounds at dusk/dawn/night you will hear rustling around you and noises and its generally small packs of animals or wolf packs following out of curiosity so once again to reiterate morbiferous' point the only really violent bears are grizzly's, kodiaks and polar bears but even then if you keep your distance youre probably fine. being that youre in alaska its a completely different environment so i cant speak but in my experience a black bear would shit itself in fear and run away before even thinking of attacking a human for food or any reason other then protecting cubs | ||

skullbash (05/16/2012) [-] yes humans are predators too and we dont kill everything we see because we dont need to we live in HUGE populations of our own kind with food whenever and wherever we need it but bears are wild animals will go for whatever they deem as an easy meal which is basicly anything smaller than them but then again im from alaska and bears that live here mostly in the wilderness that dont really meet people often will stalk you out of curiosity and then eventually try to eat you and the bears that live in/near town usually pick through trash and b/e attack dogs and cats that kinda shit People live a cushy life and it's dulling our predatory nature and intuition. | Black and brown bears. But bear attacks, not grizzly, tend to be motivated by hunger or fear. They are intelligent creatures, they know what they can and cannot win against; you don't see them fighting cougars. But when people see a bear they are afraid, bears pick up on this, and you being afraid makes you look like prey and if you look like prey then you are prey. #232
