What happened is the anime was being produced faster than the manga, so at one point they ran out of material and just started doing their own thing.
Later they went back and made an anime that is faithful to the manga. Thats brotherhood
so FMA is its own story, FMA brotherhood follows the manga
both are good, one has a movie (I think its FMA that had the movie), so its up to you whichever you wanna watch first
its a really good anime to watch if you're just starting out

Both series have movies. Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shamballa is the sequel to the first series, while Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos is a original movie with it's own story, but takes place somewhere in the Brotherhood storyline, iirc.

The Sacred Star of Milos is nowhere near FMA:Brotherhood in terms of quality, the only reason to watch it, is to see more of the Elric brothers. The animation was also different from the series, and I personally didn't like it. It's an okey movie, so you're not missing out on much.

I like things to be complete, like if there are multiple parts to a series, I'll need to watch all of them just for the sake of completing it. Honestly its a really frustrating thing to have to deal with sometimes..
It also made it awful watching a series like D Grayman because the writers went on strike and its incomplete!
Now that you mention it though, The Sacred Star of Milos does sound familiar... I think a friend of mine must have mentioned it to me or something. I don't think he liked it either though... ah well I'll suffer through -- I do like the universe FMA is set in, so maybe it won't be too bad. Thanks though!

You could read the manga for that one.
Yeah, I know that feel. I was kinda like that, I powered through series, which I couldn't stand, just so that I complete them, now I just drop them if don't like it.
It's not like the movie is bad, it's more that it's disappointing, and not something you'd expect from FMA, it feels more like studio wanted to squeeze a little more money out of the franchise and made that movie. If you liked the series, then Milos is a nice way to see some more of the Elrics, but that's mostly what it is.

What? No way, I thought the writers of the manga went on strike??
I even checked around trying to find chapters beyond where the anime stopped
I've only dropped one series, and it was Peach Girl
a friend of mine told me to watch it because she loved it, so I started to watch it, but it was a shoujo and it was just dreadful
the sad part is part of me still wants to go back and watch the rest of it.. just to have it completed.. i need help

I'll only not drop it if it's airing, that way I can see if it gets better (for the most part I only ever drop airing shows because I only pick things off my backlog that look interesting/are praised) although I usually end up dropping a lot of airing shows anyway.
Like Strike the Blood. Himeragi and her friend make me want to strangle them but the last two arcs have actually been decent. Although the main character being voiced by the same guy who voiced my favorite male character helps.

Oh, I misunderstood you. I though you meant the people behind the anime went on strike, so it wasn't continued. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D.Gray-man#Manga According this it was pause because of the mangaka's health issues, and it doesn't say anything about a continuation.
I've dropped a lot of series, not because they were bad, but mostly because I've forgotten about them, incidentally D Gray Man was one of them, got to episode 20, I think. I might go back to it someday, I enjoyed it at the time.
Lol, I read a description of that show, it looks like it's terrible.
#869582 - gardenmanly (01/28/2014) [-]
I didn't realize it was due to health issues.. now I feel kinda bad for getting upset with them.. It was a good series I hope they bring it back eventually
I always hesitate about recommending it to people though, because I did enjoy it quite a bit but the fact that it does not have an ending is such a drawback (to me at least)
Peach Girl was actually painful to watch... I saw maybe the first episode and that was it, I couldn't take it anymore. I can even get through some shoujo series, Free! Iwatobi swim club wasn't too too awful.. but Peach Girl... I don't know what my friend was thinking suggesting that!

When a manga is pause, it's very often that it's becasue the author has some health issues, bad wrist from drawing and etc. I'm kinda worried when reading the afterwords after a "Kingdom" chapter, where he says the still has some problems with his health. It's a stressful job that's for sure.
That's understandable, I hate it when series that just stop or don't have proper endings, it kinda ruins the enjoyment of the series.
