True, but friction is calculated by the Normal Force times the coefficient of friction, static or what have you. The Normal force only applies when the surface is pushing away from the surface in this equation. As the gecko is hanging, the wall is not exerting an outward normal force, so our conventional use of static friction doesn't apply. It would use some other adhesion principle, completely different from what we call friction, same way that glue sticking isn't really friction.
