Aaaaah our schools used to be similar to that I think, now it's just primary 5-11, secondary 11-16 and there's college and six form 16-18 that was optional up until like this year now you have to stay on till 18, then it's university. It's madness, my friend's from Oregon and he was saying there was a shooting right near where he lived yet he was worried about coming to the UK... which was fair really as the part of the UK I live in is notorious for violent crime

We have a low murder rate which is good I suppose. Highest violent crime rate in Europe though. But nah that's wrong there's very few states with a lower crime rate than the UK, I've researched it in the past. There's like 3 states with a lower crime rate than England and Wales, and about 7 with a lower crime rate than Scotland. Overall crime rate that is, we are very bad for certain crimes

I see, yeah we still aren't great at not being douche bags here.... people always are quick to blame guns, but i dont think they have anything to do with it, this kid used a basic hunting pump. something you dont even need a backround check or even need to be 18 to buy in canada, and look at their crime rates... I'm not 100% on how gun laws are in the UK, but as far as i know, most military rifles and handguns there are basically banned, and you can only get a controlled amount of hunting rifles and shotguns, correct? Sorry, didnt mean to turn this into a gun discussion, but its rare to find a not-douche-bag FJ'er in the comments, and i do have curiosities about the UK

Erm I'm not hugely sure either, but basically people have guns for sport and that's about it. I think they are fairly difficult for criminals to get hold of as well, although you do get some gun crime in cities. Our police don't carry guns, we have armed response units who are called upon when required. Most police like it the way it is and don't want guns, it works over here but that's because it's the way it's been for a long time it's not something that can just be implemented.

Ha, yeah i've read how a lot of countries police officers dont carry, like Japan and UK, thats both impressive and surprising, you'd ask an officer here to go without their gun and they'd laugh at you. I've had officers pull their guns on me for working in my own yard before here, questioning me and such. Of course my cities been getting really bad lately, regular road blocks with questionable ID checks, police now wear BDU's instead of regular uniforms, they all carry m4 style assault rifles, they now have a fleet hummer like trucks with what looks like M2's mounted on top, etc. But most cities aren't that bad. Actually, we have record low crime here, police are just a lil nuts. Hundreds of buisness have moved out because of it, we even drive around the city when we can instead of through it, ha. But yeah, i get what you mean, crime's decently low enough there for the cops to feel confident in their duties without the need to carry. impressive.

I wouldn't say it's because crime is low, it's just guns aren't a big problem so they don't feel the need to carry them. Decent police work is better than just pointing a gun at someone. British people are far too quick to criticise pretty much everything about Britain but I honestly think we have a brilliant police force. When they crack down on crime in a city they do it WELL. A few years back my city (Nottingham) was considered the gun crime capital of the UK, they cracked down on gun crime and now you very rarely hear of shootings in Nottingham. Also few years back Glasgow (in Scotland) was considered the most dangerous city in Europe, a police initiative was introduced to stop gang violence; violent crime in the city dropped by 50%. Yet British people still make out they are crap hmmmm... :p

I see, yeah i think i worded that badly, i just meant the crimes less often involve gun crimes, and when they do, you have your SWAT team equivalent. I've sure you have your share of shootings and stabbings and murders, and all those fabulous things, but your police are less trigger happy and more, well, policey, yes? Are police generally liked there? they definitely are not trusted here, almost equally on both sides of the political spectrum...
#60 - milthyfoustache (12/17/2013) [-]
Hmm well we have a sort of SWAT equivalent but we also have police who are like normal police but have weapons locked up in the boot (trunk) and can be called into a situation that requires armed response. No unfortunately the police aren't generally liked here, a lot of them are cunts but it would make anyone a cunt in a country like this with the crap they have to deal with on a daily basis. I have never heard tales of police corruption over here though. Our police like our armed forces seem to be very disciplined.

Can't exactly call a place hell if you have only been there 2 weeks. I could go to a shit hole in Scotland for 2 weeks and call it hell then take a step out into their gorgeous landscapes and change my mind. Should probably take time to explore shops and other landscapes before judging the country, and remember. Buy a kettle!
