| Open world, play style is completely your choice instead of always forced into run and gun situations, varying degree of customization, tells a story, has at least a somewhat deep character. Yeah, none of those are RPG-exclusive. At least anymore. Choose your own adventure titles and visual novels have choices, if you mean choices in gameplay then the same goes for many strategy titles. Customization can be found in simulator games, are they RPGs now too? Telling a story and characterization are also not RPG elements, those are simply...elements of a game. I could be here for hours on this, but here's the rule of thumb I usually stick to the clusterfuck that is the classification to Video Games: stick to the genre the devs label it with and what most others give. Makes your life much easier. | ||

| GTA V is a decent example of an RPG set in modern times, though character customization is limited. Dishonored isn't, forgot why I included that one. Far Cry 4 has limited quests outside the campaign, the majority just being standalone missions, but it is still loosely an RPG. Oh god you were serious. Now, if I may ask, how exactly is GTA V a decent example of an RPG? I usually prefer examples with my arguments. Same goes for Far Cry 4, side quests are not something exclusive to RPGs as a genre, by that logic every quasi-open world game like Jak & Daxter 2 would be viable for the RPG tag.
