No. If western powers get involved shit gets worse. The less crazy countries in the middle east (Saudi, Kuwait, Jordan, UAE) Need to come together and sort this shit out. This is their sphere.
Now ISIS is already planning ahead. They've got guys going in to these better-off countries and scaring the shit out of people. They're meeting with business/political leaders and sending across one clear message: "you're next"

These countries need to stop relying on western powers for support. Their combined strength is enough to put these ISIS motherfuckers in their place, but they're all too individually afraid of these terrorists to do anything about it. If the US gets involved, we'll belay the situation for a while, but it will come back.
If the arab world pulls together and fights this war, they have the best chance of ending it for good.

All we can do is watch and hope for the best.

>No. If western powers get involved shit gets worse.

Either way things are going to get worse it sounds like. and even if The US were to sit back and watch we're still going to get shit for it...I personally think it would be better to just take them out swiftly and carefully.

>All we can do is watch and hope for the best.

I disagree.
#279 - hugebulliest (06/28/2014) [-]
That's an insane argument that is going to result in countless deaths and eventually a big war that we really don't want.

If they are successful with taking Syria and Iraq, what will stop them from going further?
More genocides, more ethnic cleansing, more extremism.

People sitting by and watching is how we got World War 2. There was a gap of a few years where the Nazis could have been stopped. But they weren't.

The Arab world don't have the strength or unity to stand against anything at the moment, so we should just let them take over and kill countless in the process?

And lets imagine if they take over Iraq and Syria and maybe a few other countries and they don't stand down, then what?

Do you honestly these religious extremists will stand down once they feel invincible? Like they have god in their back? They will continue invading and conquering until they are stopped.

Do we really want to stand back and watch as we have another 60 million causalities that we know we could have stopped?
#803 - victorianfancyman (06/30/2014) [-]
These aren't the nazis. They're a terrorist group that's very good at manipulating the media.

They don't have the resources to occupy cities- they leave 15 guys and declare an official presence while the populace is too afraid to do anything because of all the fucked up shit ISIS has released on the internet.

If they gain such a capability, I'd change my position.
#804 - hugebulliest (06/30/2014) [-]
First of all they are no longer a terrorist group, they are an Unrecognized State.

Also, they are by far the most effective group in the middle east at the moment, taking on the Syrian military and the Iraqi one.

They have already taken loads of cities, and for every city they take they grow stronger. With an alarming rate.

People are terrified to anything, just like people are when such a brutal takeover happens. How many opposed the Nazis compared to the amount of people that joined them? Not necessary out of love, but out of fear.

And since they can already take on both Syria and Iraq, what do you think will happen later? Since they are currently only growing in size and power.

They are effective. They have tanks, they use American weapons, American vehicles and American equipment left behind. These are no longer untrained men in dresses fighting. But trained soldiers with bulletproof vests and other equipment.

People are scared because they have two choices. Join or die.
#806 - victorianfancyman (06/30/2014) [-]
They're not very well equipped. You're assigning them more power than they have. They have some older American gear that we had left with the iraqis.

They have no thermal optics, effective air defense, or combined arms training. They're not an effective force except on paper.

The social consequences of a second invasion are too high now. Even if ISIS had the capabilities you're claiming they have, an American invasion would not be able to solve the problem. These people can just hide among the population and wait us out as our economy crumbles and our will falters. It's a classic insurgency tactic- pull the power into your ow territory and make them fight a war of attrition.

Sorry, we have to wait until they're stronger. Trust me, if they ever reached the point at which they could project power (enforce and manage an actual state), we would be in a better position to fight them than we are now.

#807 - hugebulliest (07/01/2014) [-]
You know they are an hour outside of Bagdad? And the Iraqis just flee whenever fighting starts.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_State_in_Iraq_and_the_Levant

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Northern_Iraq_offensive

15,000 vs 80,000 - 190,000.... Guess who won.

Yes ISIS is not as powerful just yet, but they are still beating both Iraq and Syria. And the more they win, the more they grow.
#808 - victorianfancyman (07/01/2014) [-]
So? There is very little they can do. It's not like they can trade or manage an economy. Nobody likes them.

Either they will become like us or they will implode. In the long run they lose no matter what. Might as well not throw our own soldier's lives away fighting their war.
#809 - hugebulliest (07/01/2014) [-]
Why can't they have a working economy?

I'm sure China and Russia will be willing to buy oil from them.

But why would they have to become like us?
#814 - victorianfancyman (07/03/2014) [-]
no, china and russia hate crazy towelheads almost as much as americans

nobody wants/needs their oil. Not even china. They actually don't have enough to compete with more stable, reliable nations
#815 - hugebulliest (07/03/2014) [-]
You say they hate towel heads, but they do love Iran and their oil.
#816 - victorianfancyman (07/03/2014) [-]

I guess it's what you grow up with. I can even appreciate goal-less matches (brazil-mexico was awesome), but I don't really like basketball because it feels like if you miss a throw, it doesn't really matter because there will be plenty more. In football (soccer), scoring is much rarer which makes the emotions that go with it more intense. my two cents

You think that it would be more cost effective for the military to retrain existing reservists instead of taking raw recruits, but its whatever. This is something that I want to do.

I'm Army Reserves. Been in for 2 and 1/2 years. Decided that civilian life isn't for me yet and I just started my process for 18X!
Maybe we'll be in the same class for selection!

Hahaha small world bro, that would be wicked!

Same for me though, I've been a bit down being back home. Although I never been in the military post boot, I'm hating being back in the day to day bs of civilian life. Can't wait to go back.

Isn't it hard going from reserves to active these days?

All good in the hood man.
There's dumbasses like that in every branch. We call them Basic Training War Heros in the Army. There are other names for them as well.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that you're USMC then?
User avatar #234 - simplelife (05/21/2014) [-]
Oh yeah, a lot of tards join up lol. I've heard some horror stories from my cousin who was a grunt back in Iraq about the incompetence of the guys in his unit. Scary that these are the guys watching your back in war time. Didn't believe him at first...until I met my platoon in boot lol.

But I was in boot camp, never made it to the fleet, made it to the week before the crucible before getting injured...fucked up my knee, so they gave me the boot. My knee is all good now, so I'm in the process of getting a waiver for the Army, hoping to get that Xray contract.

I guess they were lying-ass Marines then man. No need to get flustered.
It was probably part of their quest to seem infinitely better than every other branch.
An alternative is that their DI's were like my DS' in BCT and they emphasized on their hand-to-hand. My company spent more time on our combatives than any other company in the battalion.
But, who knows? Marines will be Marines.
User avatar #226 - simplelife (05/21/2014) [-]
Sorry, thought you were spreading misinformation on purpose since you called the guys that were right wrong. My bad.

But yeah, once people see what the USMC really is about...they make shit up to seem cooler I guess. Or they're just like that. But that's a possibility, DI's do teach you their own thing in the barracks during some down time. For the most part though, the MCMAP thing is taught my certified trainers after morning chow. What the DI's like to teach you is drillin and handling your rifle so you're not a complete moron when you get down to the range. Lol
