so the video says we'd have to crush the sun into the size of a small town in order to form a black hole, but wouldn't that mean the black hole has volume? I thought black holes were singularities

The black hole has an event horizon, beyond which nothing can escape. The radius of the horizon is determined by the mass of the black hole. The singularity itself lies at the center of the black hole, is a single point and has no volume.

if that "small city" had infinite density then yes

we dont know what they are
we can just tell which gravitational force would be necessary to trap light
we can assume they are singularities for calculations and such, the volume of whatever is in the mid of it isnt relevant
#42 - comicironic (10/18/2015) [-]
What he's talking about is the Schwarzschild radius of the Sun, or a sphere with the mass of the Sun.
The volume he describes is how much you'd have to compress the mass in a sphere such that the escape velocity from its gravity is equal to the speed of light.
You can calculate it using the various physical laws. For the Sun, the radius is about 3km.

By comparison, the Schwarzschild radius for the Earth is about 9mm, making a blackhole of the Earth's mass about the size of a gumball.

The singularity has no volume according to Relativity but can have an enormous mass. The region that surrounds the black hole is defined by a boundary called the event horizon and it does have a volume.

so we define a black hole's volume by what's inside its event horizon?

black holes have mass so black holes have volume

the center of a black hole is the singularity which basically means it has infinite gravity or at least how we measure gravity can't measure its gravity

I'm no physicist but I think the size of the black hole shown is the size of it's gravitational field. The singularity would be dead centre of it.
