sao (12/31/2012) [-] Although everyone on the board is critical of the big three (Bleach,Naruto,OP), they are all great entry level anime. Honestly, if you are just getting started, they are all good choices. Bleach is more serious but it has a lot of boring filler episodes. Naruto also has filler episodes, but in general it has a wider universe and is big for beginners. One Piece is goofy but my favorite of the big 3. As long as you don't watch the dub, you should be good, and the OP filler episodes are probably the most interesting of the three.
If you aren't dead set on the big 3, but are still looking for something new, look no farther. Check out Code Geass and Mobile Suit Gundam 00 for mechas, check out JoJo (2012) for manly comedy, check out Elfen Lied if you want gore, check out FMA/FMAB if you want scientific magic and an expansive universe (These are great for starters), check out Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha if you want dark batman with minor supernatural, check out Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari if you want action harem. If you want feels you can check out Angel Beats (Feels with weapons), or Clannad.
If you are willing to grab something that's not modern, then boy are you in for some fun. Check out Trigun for an overpowerd MC set in a futuristic western, check out Cowboy Bebop for space noir, check out Berserk for amazing Medieval Times action, Hajime no Ippo for sports (Amazing boxing anime), Neon Genesis Evangelion for though provoking mecha (Although it'll be deep for an entry level viewer), Detective Conan for comedy mystery, and D.Gray-man for crazy scifi alternate reality set in the early 1900's.

silenceikillu (12/31/2012) [-] Well thanks for the advice, in fact I'm just starting the first episode of FMA Brotherhood right now since a lot of people on the board recommended it. I'm mostly looking for shows that are a good amount of action, but some other good traits would be drama or gore. Also I'm pretty set on only watching dubs, I'd really rather not watch anything subbed.

sao (12/31/2012) [-] Well the good thing for you is that Brotherhood has a great dub. Elfen Lied really came out of nowhere with their implementation of gore so a lot of novice anime viewers saw it and their tastes quickly changed a long a non standard route. That influx of people made the already adept anime watchers see Elfen Lied as an anime that people only enjoy because it's edgy. If you want to try anime that's bloody, you might as well start with the gateway anime.....just don't tell the board about it. You will find certain anime religiously hated on the board; The big 3 (OP less than the others), Elfen Lied, SAO, HoTD, Steins Gate (This can really go either way)....the list goes on, but I digress. Just because /anime/ says it's bad, doesn't mean it is, and you might want to check out Elfen Lied after FMAB
