I don't recognize the scene, probably because I haven't gotten to that part of the game yet, but those characters are most definitely from The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. The second chapter specifically, given that turquoise shoulder guard Estelle is wearing.

That depends entirely on when you become invested in the characters. Personally I kinda fell in love with Estelle's character from the start, so it wasn't hard to get into the game for me. I will admit I put it down after chapter 2 and didn't pick it back up for several months, but when I did get back 'round to it I tore through the rest in one sitting and loved it. I haven't finished the second chapter yet, but I really do need to get back on that.
What I will say is that it definitely is not a game you play for the combat. If the story doesn't engross you the game is not for you. Not to say the combat system is bad, it's just fairly simple and not really all that engaging. It can be challenging but there's no real complexity to it.

The story is a very slow burner. The whole overarching plot doesn't really get addressed for the first half of the game, and even then it's mostly as a lead-in to the second game. It's been awhile but I'd say the story really starts rolling around chapter 3. Chapter 2 is good too, but you meet some of the most interesting characters in chapter 3 and finally start getting some answers. Which lead to more questions, of course, but that is the nature of the beast.
