The common response to that is to bring up how the nazi/japanese troops that actually committed most of the genocide during WWII were following orders, and that they were just doing their jobs. You really have to look at the reasons for the war and what is being done in the war, and if it's something terrible, the soldiers are still responsible.

Also, to the point of needing to hate the soldiers instead of the government, you do realize that our recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had massive support behind them when they started up. The public wanted to go to war, the government is just the method by which you do that. So hating the specifically government for going into a stupid war that the public demands is completely irrational.

And just a little side note about the "give a little more respect" line: in the US, at least in public, the troops are holier than Jesus. They are absolutely fucking worshipped, to the point where supporting our troops is a way to say what you want with impunity because anybody who argues with you is "against the troops". And yet most of that respect for troops in modern times is completely undeserved as we haven't had a meaningful war in a long time.

The Japanese troops "had to" follow the orders because Bushido and their honor demanded it.

Most of the German army under the Nazi's didn't kill innocent civilians. That was the job of the SS, and in the cases where the German soldiers were ordered to gun down civilians it was usually done with an SS officer standing behind him ready to shoot him if they didn't follow the order. Of course there were some psychopaths in the regular army but name one army that didn't have a few.

U.S. troops actually have all the right in the world to tell a superior to go fuck himself if said superior orders him to say, kill an entire village or execute prisoners. So the whole Japanese/Nazi argument doesn't apply to an army that allows soldiers to deny an order based on the legality of the order.

While you're right that most of the nazi soldiers weren't killing the civilians themselves, it isn't like they didn't know what was going on (except maybe right at the start of the war) and they were still partly responsible for the deaths.

My mentioning the Japanese soldiers was less about following orders, although that is part of it, but more to counter an argument that I see a lot about patriotism. The idea is that you should support our troops because they're patriots, and I talked about the Japanese soldiers because they were patriotic to the point where they would volunteer to join units whose sole purpose was to crash their planes into ships, and the last soldier surrendered WWII in the 70's. And yet it would be bad to support them because they did terrible things. I know that he didn't make that argument, but I figured that somebody would probably respond with it so I included it in the same comment.

I can't disagree about the Nazi soldiers, because you're right. I do understand them a little, not because I think the Nazi's did anything right, but because if they didn't follow orders they could get themselves and their families shot.

I see what you're saying about the Japanese, so I'll just say support the troops till they start doing the morally wrong things. Have a good night.

i bet you eat a lot of mcdonalds, don't you? If yes, maybe you should consider rethinking your diet before you send yourself to an early grave via diabetes, perhaps even take a few jogs, just a suggestion

It's not the publics fault for not having nuclear fusion. It's nobodys' really. We haven't discovered ways to be able to both produce and contain the process of nuclear fusion even scientists have been researching the subject for decades.
