If you keep failing, try going at it a different way. If what you normally do pushes people away, act as confident as you can that they can't leave without you. It may not work at first, but practice helps.

It may not be related to the topic at hand, but I used to be that really annoying kid that acted like he was better than everyone else (and knew everything) that everyone hated. I decided when I started highschool "Alright, what happens if I start acting like the exact opposite of what I normally do...?" I became able to talk to everyone normally, and eventually my acting and true personality merged, allowing me to do pretty much anything without worrying about it (probably due to becoming my own opposite personality-wise made me more flexible). By the time I graduated, I was the shameless guy that got along with almost everyone and was laughing almost constantly.
