No, that's very much how it's always been intended to work, people just like denying it a lot and pretending it's not. School has one goal - to prepare you for your life as a working class adult. Elementary school teaches you the basic skills you need like reading, writing and enough math to get by. Middle school expands on those and throws in some other stuff that could be useful to know. Highschool is basically 4-5 years of pointless bullshit, which is meant to teach you the most important skill of all - putting up with your superiors and doing what you are told, no matter how stupid it is. Then, if you somehow managed to make it through the grinder with some ambitions and dreams intact, you can try to get a college or university degree. However, those are not meant for working class plebs, so they try to greatly limit the number of people that can get a higher education. In some countries like the US, they do this by making it absurdly expensive so only the rich people or the people dedicated and hard-working enough to get a scholarship can get in. In other countries, like mine, they do it by making it absurdly hard, so only the dedicated and hard-working can get in and the MOST dedicated and hard-working can get out. Then, if you make it through the meat grinder, you can make something of yourself and aspire to be something more than a shop clerk or garbage man. No disrespect for those jobs, they're way more important than my programming, but I just don't want to do them.
