Yeah, but then again, that's exactly why it's an issue: we are not the ones they have to worry about. There are people out there - sociopaths - who WOULD take it as an invitation to do whatever they want to someone. Those people are the ones they have to worry about, and avoiding provoking someone who is by definition impossible to reason with is why carefully choosing your clothing makes sense. It's not about it being your fault that they attacked you, as victims are never the guilty party: it's about meeting an unstoppable force with an immovable object.

Like I always say, "Jeffrey Dahmer would not have been stopped by a finger-wagging." But that's also the reason why I think everyone of sound mind should be able to carry a handgun "just in case." Good people don't rape, and bad people don't care; so, you'd better have a way to make the bad people stop.

I think that part of the reason it doesn't sit well with people is that we know it shouldn't have an effect on our perception (because we don't like to think that we are so shallow as a species that first impressions would matter), but it just plain does. When you first see someone, whether it's a conscious process or not, you engage in forming a set of opinions about them. This is a survival trait developed in order to speed up the decision-making process with regards to identifying potential predators, competitors, and mates, and it has persisted because it is just plain useful for those basic reasons.

We don't want to think that first impressions are important to us since they do sometimes turn out to be wrong, but it is extremely useful to be able to look at the subtle features of a person (for example) holding a knife and determine on the fly if they are a chef or a serial killer.

And, for people who are assholes, all they ever may care about are the first impression; so, yes, clothing will affect how people treat you. It's not a question of "should it?" because we already know that it shouldn't; it's a question of "will it?", and we know that the answer is, "yes". It's one of the processes that forms the basis for our entire psyche as social animals.

True, good sir, true. Luckily though our general psyche as a male species isn't "see boobs > boner mode activate > time to rape" which is to what I was referring. Granted, I can admit I've seen a girl walking down the sidewalk tight tube top booty shorts the whole nine yards and my first thought is "yea, I'd show her a good time. Wine, dine, dick her in the behind" but the idea that because that was my first thought and therefore justifies raping her is something that doesn't sit well. But, I do agree with you.
