You didn't understand what I said. You are seeing the byzantines as sucessors to the romans by titles and institutions, and in that sense you are right.

But at the same time, the eastern empire became very different culturally in relation to the old unified empire. Orthodox christianity, greek as lingua franca, a different view on the persona of the emperor... they didn't follow roman culture.

I'm not saying the germans and franks had more right than them. The "vandal sack of Rome" itself was in truth a rebellion of the vandal auxiliaires, that sent the imperial relics to Byzantium so that the emperor of the east could assume the western throne. So they were inheritors for the title of roman empire, yes, but not of the roman people. And as the middle-ages drew to a close, it began to matter. The Hundred Years War began to change the view of a nation from "collection of lands under a title" to "collecion of the territory of a certain culturally dinstinctive people" in the eyes of the west.

The invention of the term byzantine, and the posterior growth it received, was much more a product of the growth of the role culture had in defining a nation than someone trying to discredit the eastern empire. No one thought the HRE was roman either.

About greek as lingua franca I can agree...but about Roman culture i dont know. They were continuation of distinct Romano-hellenic culture that was already there in the time of unified Rome. Also I don't see how Orthodox Christianity ties in to it all. Christianity for most part wasn't ...part of Roman culture and it was introduced by Constantine later on (Emperor ruling from Constantinople). Great schism was more of political power struggle then anything else

True, they called themselves roman empire, but they weren't a continuation of the Romans.
Maybe in the very beggining of the empire, while it coexisted with the western counterpart, whose culture was dominating. After 476 dC, the eastern empire slowly gravitated away from the original roman culture and organization and adapted a distinctive greek/hellenic culture.

An example of that is the title of the byzantine emperor. Instead of Imperator, Rex, Pontifex Maximus or any other common roman term for holders of power, the byzantine emperor was called a Basileus - greek word for king. Or the different views on christianity the two halves of the empire had, that culminated centuries later on the orient schism.
User avatar #38 - serotonin (02/18/2015) [-]
"All Byzantine emperors considered themselves "Roman Emperors,"[2] the term "Byzantine" was coined by Western historiography only in the 16th century. The use of the title "Roman Emperor" was not contested until after the Papal coronation of the Frankish Charlemagne as "Holy Roman Emperor" (25 December 800 AD), done partly in response to the Byzantine coronation of Empress Irene, whose claim, as a woman, was not recognized by Pope Leo III."

"Their names were preceded by Imperator Caesar and followed by Augustus. Following Heraclius, the title commonly became the Greek Basileus (Gr. Βασιλεύς), which had formerly meant sovereign but was then used in place of Augustus."...but first part Imperator Caesar was still present and Basileus was used even when Rome was united for all Emperors or Governors that ruled from Constantinople

yes, they were continuation. More so then barbarians that destroyed western part of empire and then called them self emperors or Romans. It would be like if ...Pakistanis occupied England all the way to York and then call them self UK while northern part of England and Scotland are still around and independent.

Persians, long time enemy and neighbor of Roman Empire, called Byzantium Roman Empire

1.) Do you believe in anything that usually would be classed supernatural or have you jumped on the Dawkins/Harris/Hitchens etc train?
2.) Can suicidal ideation manifest itself within dreams?
User avatar #154 to #153 - serotonin ONLINE (08/07/2014) [-]
1) I...dont have good answer to that question. I think that there might be some things that one could call supernatural but that they are something natural that we still dont understand. I call ******* on most of this things but I have experienced my self some strange things and know reliable people that had also seen/lived trough some strange stuff0 so,...I am veeeeeeery sceptical about most of that stuff but I leave open mind.
2) suicidal ideation is not my field but I guess that they can. Dreams will have elements that preocupy you so if you have frequent suicidal ideas they will probably pop in your dreams

What if autism is just a label we give people who are incredibly sharp and clear thought? Or maybe not JUST give to people like that, but a lot of them are just misdiagnosed focused people?

You can have really smart autistic people and one that are not so much. Then again you have people that are inceradibly smart yet are not autistic at all. Autism is soft construct but i dont think that misdiagnosig happens a lot

Soft construct....I dont know is there proper word in English (probably is). I tried to say that it is not compleatly clearly defined and that it is still subject to debate and change (new DSM and whole aspargers - autism thing). Still its much more "solid" then some other constructs that we find in psychology like psychopaty and narcissism

hey serotonin

sorry to be bothering you again but, do you believe in free will or hard determinism?
User avatar #109 to #108 - serotonin ONLINE (12/09/2013) [-]
Complex subject and if you add quantum phisics and multiverse theory then it just gets ridicoulous. Anyhow.... determinism seems more plausible to me. You stand in front of the rack in the store. You have 10 different types of chockolate that you can buy, you can buy any one you like but on the other hand your previous experiances/chemical reactions/ particle interaction is driving you forward to take one type. Even if you choose at random that action is still predetermined by other actions and so on.
I made one tought experiment on that subject (leater I found out that ofcourse I wasnt first one to figure it out). Imagine if you have infinitly powerfull computer that exist outside of this universe. You (somehow) pause entire universe and input in to the comp every law of physics and position and specifications of each and every particle and bit of energy. Then you would be able to start program in computer and to observe universe inside it and predict with absolute precision what would happen if you are to ``resume`` the universe. That is all nice and dandy but quantum ph. trows monkey wrench in this little idea. If on subatomic level things are really completly unpredictable then super hard determinism doesnt hold but on the other hand it is not giving us free will per se. I really doubt that spin of electrons has much infuence on type of chocolate that you will take (but mabe it does).
Complicated question - complicated answer

User avatar #110 to #109 - revengeforfreeze (12/09/2013) [-]
Thanks, that was a thought provoking post

Well, I asked you because you were a psychologist and psychologists tend to have at least a basic comprehension of such matters like free will, morality and such.

Thanks again. The reason I ask is simply because I am interested in matters of free will, morality etc, seek knowledge.. half-actively

User avatar #112 to #111 - revengeforfreeze (12/09/2013) [-]

i just watched a video by sam harris and i thought that it fit my worldview, and I read his book, then I saw a quote by schopenhauer "A man can do what he wills, but not will what he wills." so I thought hey that fits my worldview.. I don't have an extensive long complicated reply.. sorry :|
User avatar #115 to #114 - serotonin ONLINE (12/09/2013) [-]
I am not familiar with his work.
If you take that qoute then you can say that action comes from will, but also that ones own will is not his choosing. So....I guess that persons action is in the end determined by something out of his control. Correct me if I am wrong.
User avatar #116 to #115 - revengeforfreeze (12/09/2013) [-]

User avatar #94 to #93 - serotonin ONLINE (11/28/2013) [-]
yes I am psycho (how the hell do you know that)

Put it in the some kind of context
User avatar #95 to #94 - revengeforfreeze (11/28/2013) [-]
I think you said some time or something. I don't remember actually.

Well, for example. Guy randomly used to bully me for my looks and I look fine, really. Was he insecure about himself?

And what'd be the best way to get revenge

not that I'm going to just a thought experiment
User avatar #96 to #95 - serotonin ONLINE (11/28/2013) [-]
Well there are several options
-He might be trying to show his ``power`` and to secure his place in ``packing order``. This is not official psycho theory as far as I know (its something that I came up with). All social mamals do it so I presume that humans do it also
- Agressive behavior usally stems from few sources: 1) Frustration - you are standing somehow beatween him and something that he wants to achive. 2) Fear - He doesnt understand you or see you as potentional threat in some way 3)defensive reaction - I think that we can rule this one out.
It is very possible that he is insecure about his looks or maybe in you he sees something that he doesnt like about him self.
I cant cast a spell and remotely find out which one it is (if its any of things that I listed)
If he is projecting his insecutirities on you maybe just droping hammer on him would be most efficient. ``Dude, I dont know why you are so fixated on my looks. I am perfectly fine with them so I dont know what your problem is. If you keep opsesing about my body I will be forced to conclude that I turn you on and if that is the case I have to say that I am sorry but I dont swing that way``...It just came to me that it might be also reasonable theory. Maybe you are activating in him some kind of homoerotic tendencies which he finds unacceptable and so he turns it into agression.

Anyhow all you got from me is bunch of theories. I hope that I helped you a bit
User avatar #98 to #96 - revengeforfreeze (11/28/2013) [-]

Wait.. you accepted my request after all?? MY GOD.
I felt like checking my friend list today and I found you. Why did I think you rejected it?! I'm retarded...
Hello, how is it going..
User avatar #59 to #58 - serotonin ONLINE (02/27/2013) [-]
Please remind me did we have any conversations? Lately I am extremely preoccupied so I cant remember.
Not bad...I got a job and I am doing some freelance work on top of that.
You?
User avatar #60 to #59 - arandomanon ONLINE (02/27/2013) [-]
I don't blame you if you don't remember me, it was long time ago. I hardly remember myself. We had kind of a small conversation about our lands and about agnosticism. I added you because you seemed a cool person but I didn't check it correctly and I thought you declined.
I'm fine, thanks. Been studying and stuff. Don't like it but I guess I can't complain.
What's your job about?
User avatar #61 to #60 - serotonin ONLINE (02/27/2013) [-]
I....I think I remember. I have narrowed you down to 2 possible guy. Are you also agnostic or not? that would solve it for me. Thanks for ....lack of blaming or how ever you say that.
I am HR assistant in little outsourcing company. Freelancing as research consultant and statistics/SPSS teacher
User avatar #62 to #61 - arandomanon ONLINE (02/27/2013) [-]
Nothing to excuse about, all good. I'm agnostic too. And I'm Spanish. Perhaps that'd help you to remember

Sounds interesting. Freelancing may be hard but it has its advantages.
User avatar #63 to #62 - serotonin ONLINE (02/27/2013) [-]
I remember now. Well freelancing just something I do for the love of science :) ...and to few extra bucks dont hurt

It's a good thing liking your job, even if you don't get paid a lot.

Confucius said: If you like your job, you wont work a day in your life...this is ruff translation

Oh yes, I heard that one. Wish I liked my job haha.
User avatar #67 to #66 - serotonin ONLINE (02/27/2013) [-]
what do you do exactly
User avatar #68 to #67 - arandomanon ONLINE (02/27/2013) [-]
Well I don't actually have a job... I just help a bit my parents out with their shop. And I'm studying an engineering that I don't really enjoy.
User avatar #69 to #68 - serotonin ONLINE (02/27/2013) [-]
1. why did you choose something that you dont like
2. what do you like?
User avatar #70 to #69 - arandomanon ONLINE (02/27/2013) [-]
I chose it because at first I thought I liked it and because of the economy if I studied what I like, I'd probably starve to death. I love history.
User avatar #71 to #70 - serotonin ONLINE (02/27/2013) [-]
oh...yes, you probably would. Maybe working as professor
User avatar #72 to #71 - arandomanon ONLINE (02/27/2013) [-]
Yeah that was what I thought of but it's hard to get a professor vacancy. I study history as a hobby but sadly I think that I will never study it seriously.
