minutes (01/06/2016) [-] He basically found empirically that protestants are richer and more likely to get into buisness jobs and stuff where you get much money. So his thesis was that protestantism basically is the reason for modern capitalism (important, MODERN capitalism, not just capitalism that shit existed for ages already). I don't know the english words for it but there was some new religious movement in protestantism that basically said you're not able to do stuff to get into heaven. Whether you're chosen for heaven or not is determined before you were born by god for reasons unknown by any human. Now in a time where the after life was more important and more real than the actual life, this was a hard pill to swallow for people. You couldn't just do good stuff and hope that will get you into heaven BUT (and thats where his explanation lies) there were signs that show that you might be a chosen one. And these signs were being rich, humble and overall a nice hard working person. This lead to the complete structure of modern capitalism, people changed their ways to get the signs that they were choosen, so they worked hard and invested into growing their buisnesses which made the economy grow and so furth. They weren't "allowed" to spent the money they earned, they just had to invest it etc. to get even more out of it. Now in modern times the reason for this way of life got lost, no one cares about the religious roods anymore, but the mindset stayed the same. You should definitly read this by yourself but this should work as overall overview. Thank you very much. I know most of it but my assignment is to compare his analysis to working conditions at Amazon so I really just wanted a brief synopsis I could refer to without having to jump through Capital. You are a wonderful person and I really appreciate the help!!

anon (01/03/2016) [-] Yes, the Greeks knew, but so did pretty much everyone else. Information that old doesn't just go away. That myth was often propagated by Protestant reformers as a way to discredit the Catholic Church, along with the popular usage of the term "Dark Ages" (Though the term itself was coined by Petrarch). "Back when the Church was in power, people were so in the dark that they believed the world was flat!" For example, Columbus was actually in the wrong. It was widely known that the earth was round (and represented that way in symbolism since ancient times) but he thought that it was smaller than the other scholars (who were correct in their measurements). He thought that it was small enough to sail from Spain to India and not die. He would have died, if the New World hadn't happened to be there.
