You got to the Undead Church and killed the Knight of Berenike, but were killed by the Channeler? Bro, there was an elevator nearby that goes right back to Firelink Shrine, so you could go back to Firelink, rest, and use the elevator to come back and fight the Channeler. You failed.

You can get Zweihander in there, it's this epic greatsword that can send Undead flying, it's on one of the dead bodies there.

Greatsword? I don't think I can use anything other than an axe anymore....

You could use a Winged Spear. Spears are easy to use. Just go into the same place the Zweihander is in.

Run past those skeletons.

Funny you should ask. Once you beat the Bell Gargoyles in the Undead Church and ring the Bell of Awakening, and then ring the Bell of Awakening down in Blighttown, something happens... Because of the thing that happens (no spoilers here), you get to convert items into souls.

There's a smith near the Undead Church who can upgrade your weapons so they do more damage.

IN NG+ you get like 500 souls per normal Undead. I got 170k souls for one of the bosses. The souls you get for the shortswords are pretty miniscule compared to the other things you get at that point in the game.
