I've played a couple of gigs, and it's nowhere close to just pushing 'play', and pretend to turn knobs. Or that depends on your kind of style, if you just beatmash, or do live mash-ups.

i do and dont start off producing. Begin with a simple dj software like virual dj and work your way up from that to something like traktor. Once you've the hang of that you can begin producing but I highly recommend using tutorials instead of doing it yourself. And yes it is time consuming but is worth it when you can start getting gigs :) Hope i helped :) (pic related proper djs :D )
