They were still used - just illegal. And Vader & Palpatine don't count, because the laws don't apply to them. Vader continued using combat droids for training & assassination, and the Emperor continued cloning (himself, repeatedly) in a secret facility on Byss.

It was the "Dark Empire" storyline, set 6 years after the Battle of Endor. Palpatine has blank, mindless clones of his young self on the deep core world of Byss, and when he dies his force-spirit is able to inhabit them. After Vader kills him he jumps into a clone, spends a few years consolidating his strength and then comes back to try and reform the empire. He even succeeds (briefly) in turning Luke Skywalker to the darkside, and Luke becomes his apprentice for a short time.

one the one hand it sucks that all that work is put aside and no longer relevant on the other hand there was a lot of convoluted crap in there, episode 1,2 and 3 where bad enough with Palpatine planning the whole thing if the movies where as stupid the nerd-rage would destroy us all

Oh yeah, absolutely. I'm a huge Star Wars nut, but a lot of the stuff from the EU is utter trash. Lucasarts basically went through a period of granting an official license to every wannabe fanfic writer who knocked on their door. As long as the author was happy to hand over the lion's share of profits from sales, the Star Wars franchise machine would rubberstamp any piece of crap they threw out there.

I'd take some ideas from the actual series, ie. like a couple of episodes in TOS where something gets aboard the ship and the captain/a high ranking officer finds dead bodies and has to figure out what did it.
Alternatively, you could do the other types of episodes where you lose contact with the security team or they do not return or something so you are forced to go down to investigate.

Make red shirts a scarce resource and if too many die in battle, you won't be able to recruit as much because everyone thinks your vessel is dooming them.

you could make it part of a command chain that the PCs have to go down to check planets because they are the highest skilled in doing so.

alternatively you could force situations where the command PC's need to be sent down by command of the planets government.

It mostly sorted itself out, the security mooks were level 2 non-heroic NPCs, and they were getting sent into encounters that were levelled for a party of 6 level 10 heroes. After about 3 missions they didn't have any security officers left to send ahead of them.

What you should do is have them cut off contact with the team. Not them dying, but just contact cut. Anyone else they send also goes through it and gets contact cut. Eventually they will be forced to leave.

Yeah it's a pain in the ass to position it. It also die several shelve dives during hot Summer days. But after moving out from my parents' home it seems stable. You gotta tilt the part with the human victim a bit to balance it out.
