one the one hand it sucks that all that work is put aside and no longer relevant on the other hand there was a lot of convoluted crap in there, episode 1,2 and 3 where bad enough with Palpatine planning the whole thing if the movies where as stupid the nerd-rage would destroy us all

Oh yeah, absolutely. I'm a huge Star Wars nut, but a lot of the stuff from the EU is utter trash. Lucasarts basically went through a period of granting an official license to every wannabe fanfic writer who knocked on their door. As long as the author was happy to hand over the lion's share of profits from sales, the Star Wars franchise machine would rubberstamp any piece of crap they threw out there.

It was the "Dark Empire" storyline, set 6 years after the Battle of Endor. Palpatine has blank, mindless clones of his young self on the deep core world of Byss, and when he dies his force-spirit is able to inhabit them. After Vader kills him he jumps into a clone, spends a few years consolidating his strength and then comes back to try and reform the empire. He even succeeds (briefly) in turning Luke Skywalker to the darkside, and Luke becomes his apprentice for a short time.
