I don't want people to be on the streets, but I live in Detroit, and there are people on welfare that are perfectly capable of getting a job. I know so many people who want to live on it, because it means that they don't have to work. And I'm not defending the rich, either. Most of the rich people in the world have more than enough to live comfortably in luxury, and should VOLUNTEER to give to charity.

Except the problem with your solution is that it welfare becomes completely dependent on the individual. The funding generated through voluntary means will nowhere near be enough to fund the welfare system (36% of my tax in the UK is spent on a form of welfare).

I recommend you try and get hold of a BBC documentary called 'Poor Kids'. It's about families living on benefits in the UK. It'll show you the value of the entitlement system, with the BBCs usual impartiality (or best attempt thereof).

socialism is a way to take from the harder working and give it to the less fortunate. There are better ways to do that without making it mandatory with the government.

Hmm. Yes I'd thought I'd get some negative thumbs. First of all it's a huge misconception that many people scrounge for welfare/benefits, as tribunal staff will tell you. I don't think there is anyone in the world that actually WANTS to be on benefits- weekly benfits for unemployment amount to almost nothing in the UK. You also ignore the fact that the vast majority of welfare is spent not on the unemployed, but a huge amount on the elderly and disabled. It's very easy to say 'cut welfare funding', but when you're in a home at 90yo, you'll be the one needing the funding.
You ignore the fact that refusing to tax the rich is an economic pitfall- the rich don't spend their money, they save it, and use it to earn more money. And guess what, more money at the top means less at the bottom.
