Or you just workout with cadio on a -400 calorie diet.
#14620 - marinepenguin (06/27/2014) [-]
You basically have how it works down, most people don't know the best way for things to work towards certain goals. But from what I've seen these past few years, barbell training is better then 90% of all other training if your goal is to get into athletic shape.
#14617 - leobaloy (06/27/2014) [-]
I really have to disagree and agree on that.
I'm already a skinny guy.
Why I disagree:
5'11, 28.5" waist on my jeans, in the beginning of this year I was 154. I'm at 140 now. Granted I changed my eating habits and workout to be primarily cardio based in March. In three months I have lost 14 pounds, thanks to cutting carbs and increasing my cardio workout. Before that I went to a gym regularly, as in daily. Did 20 mins jogging at 7.5mph, and then proceeded to do weights a well as body weight exercises. Then I change my workout to be 6x more cardio, and I lost 14 pounds in 3 months. I'm not trying to brag or anything, no one can actually tell I lost weight, but I am definitely more cut than before.
The only thing I agree with you is that to anyone wanting to lose weight endurance cardio won't benefit you. And that's as far as I'll agree, because now I have to disagree again.
Lifting will not help you lose weight either. You may look smaller, but overall your weight will still the same, as muscle is much more dense than fat, as a result, muscle is heavier. I'm not saying you didn't lose weight or not, but I'm sure just lifting weights wasn't the only factor.
If you want to lose weight. Change your fucking diet.
If you want to get fit, change your diet and work out, and depending on your body type cardio may be better for you, or lifting will.
Once again. To all fat people wanting to lose weight. Change your fucking diet. Consuming 200g+ of carbs is not healthy at all yes I'm aware plenty of athletes consume a lot, but these athletes are usually huge bearmode looking mofos, who are appalled at the idea of losing weight , cut as much sugar from your diet as you can. Seriously, cut carbs from your diet and you'll see that you probably won't eat past 2k calories daily, without even paying attention to calorie values.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there.
Endurance cardio, or jogging mostly, causes you to lose muscle mass and for your metabolism to drop. When this happens the loss of muscle causes your metabolism to go down even further. So you begin to stop losing weight after awhile. So as soon as you stop doing the activities that you are doing to lose weight, you gain everything back and more. Except now you have a lower metabolism and less muscle, so it's even harder to lose weight.
Lifting weights is actually great for losing weight, you burn more calories within a short period of time, because it is promotes strength over endurance you don't lose muscle mass and instead will lose nearly pure fat (that's what 95% of people mean when they want to lose weight, so I don't know where you were going with that whole argument)
Oh and btw I usually have over 200g of carbs within a day, I have about 220g of protein alone every day and I'm 190 pounds, not bearmode by any means.

"Endurance cardio, or jogging mostly, causes you to lose muscle mass and for your metabolism to drop"
Eat for calories.
#14622 - leobaloy (06/28/2014) [-]
Considering the topic is about weight loss. I have no idea how you're going to argue that dieting is the best for weight loss.
I do ridiculous amounts of endurance cardio, and do some body weight and light weights. I was able to bench 120 in December, and I can bench 120 as of June 17th. I can safely say I have yet to lose any muscle mass. Now am I saying that doing pure endurance training is good? No, that's terrible and never said that, I just said I increased my cardio time in my workout. And as a result I have lost weight because of it, that wasn't muscle.
I can see how people think running slows your metabolism. If you just run, and do nothing else, you will lose muscle mass, because your body tries to be efficient emphasis on try, the human body is far from efficient . And as a result, your muscles, in your arms, back and chest will get smaller due to minimal use. What does this mean? It means that your muscle now requires less calories. If you were to calculate how many calories you needed exactly due to your now decreased energy needs, you wouldn't gain weight, but its not exactly easy or practical to do this. So sometimes there are weight gains instead of losses, because once again, people don't watch their diets.
Advocating just one type of exercise is stupid, and no one would ever recommend this. I hope and think you would agree on this.
Once again, if you want to lose weight (as that was OP's topic), change your diet.
If you want to get fit, diet and exercise.
Again, I think you would agree.
As an amateur boxer, I can see why you weigh 190, I have seen the pictures of yourself that you have posted. You'd get murdered boxing anyone in your weight class looking like that. That's from aesthetics alone. Personally I think you could easily lose about 15-20 lbs, obvioiusly while retaining your muscle. But this is from a boxer point of view, so take that as you will. 200g of carbs seems like overkill and unneeded.
#14625 - marinepenguin (06/28/2014) [-]
I never said dieting wasn't the best thing for weight loss, and I wasn't advocating for only one exercise alone. Just describing how cardio CAN (not will) make you lose muscle mass.
Cardio only, will make you lose muscle mass.
If your goal is to gain muscle mass, doing cardio and endurance running will slow down your progress
Not trying to harp on you, because you do have an okay grasp of how things work physiologically-wise, but a bench of 120 pounds for a man, even a novice, is very very low, especially if weight training is what you do.
The reason your metabolism goes down, and why you "lose muscle" is because Type 2 muscle fibers, used for endurance and low intensity work, are stressed during jogging and cario. They are much smaller then Type 1, which is used for power and high intensity. As the Type 1 fibers are made smaller, and the Type 2 get used to work, you get smaller, and need fewer calories to work. That is how you get a lower metabolism and muscle mass. This can be prevented by doing more strength of high intensity exercises. Leading to better strength and size retention.
Otherwise, I agree about diet and exercise.
As for me specifically, I'm 6'3 and 190 pounds right now at about 15% body fat. My specific goal is to gain muscle mass and eventually reach 200lbs at 10% bodyfat, so I need to eat that much right now, especially at my height. From a fighters standpoint, yes I would get demolished in my weight class, but I'm not training to be a fighter, and neither am I worried about that in that time. I'm focusing on strength and size, so how well I would do in a boxing match doesn't really concern me.
#14626 - leobaloy (06/28/2014) [-]
I don't need to bench more than 120, which is 85% of my bodyweight. I can bench more, but between doing 120 and push ups I have more than enough chest strength. I just need enough so if I do get hit in the chest, its not a crucial blow. I can squat 405 (289% of my bodyweight) no that's not a typo, and no i'm not near death while doing that , because legs and your core are the best weapon in boxing. But once again, I know my benching is nothing to write home about.
I brought up your weight because at 190 lbs 15% which I now know , you could easily (and healthily) lose 15-20 lbs as I had estimated, and that definitely would give you a really cut look. But yes, I know the basics of science, so I know how trying to bulk up works. I've known about the conservation of mass since the 5th grade.
But back to the subject.
Let's be real here, the majority of people who are fat are fat because they're lazy. Sure there's a percentage that either have thyroid, diabetes although in most cases diabetes develops because you were fat, although I do know it can be genetic, I had a friend in grade school, kid was diabetic, was as skinny as me and had no fault in it at all or genetic issues, but they don't make the majority. And the easiest way for a lazy person to lose weight is to alter the diet. Personally I've seen and experienced that limiting your carb intake is the easiest way. As you just limit your starch consumption and start drinking water or tea. And lazy people are all about things that are easy.
What is your goal in reaching 200lbs at 10%? Just a personal thing? Cuz that's what I'm assuming
#14628 - marinepenguin (06/28/2014) [-]
LIke I said I was never trying to rag on you or anything like that. Your squat is very impressive.
And while I could lose 15-20 lbs, since I'm trying to gain weight, continually cutting and then trying to build lean muscle mass would be counterproductive. Plus I still look pretty good, since 15% really isn't bad at all.
And I can really agree with your final point there. The reason I have a lot of carbs and protein is because I do a lot of high intensity and high volume work to best build strength and size for my body type. So while for a normal person my intakes may be high, at my size and activity level I'm doing fine.
Well, 200 at 10% is my goal for right now. It's my short term goal really.
I hope to eventually be able to reach 240 at 10% as a lifetime goal.
But basically I just want to be the biggest strongest motherfucker that I can be. But for my size right now, I think my legs need the most work, definitely. My upper body is good, percentage-wise, but my legs have always been a bit underworked.
What about you? What are your goals and wants?
#14630 - leobaloy (06/28/2014) [-]
240 10%, 6'3, mfw
You're going for a JoJo/Ike-tier look
And sadly, the average US citizen eats about that many carbs (nowhere near that amount of protein)
#14636 - marinepenguin (06/28/2014) [-]
Well, skinny guys can get strong. You are doing basically what powerlifters do. Focus only on strength and not worried about size. You don't have to be big to be strong. Strong is a very objective thing. To the average person, a 405 pound squat is a lot. To someone who has worked out for 5-10 years it isn't.
Just an example is that I watched a video of a 100 pound Korean powerlifting girl who was squatting 600lbs for reps. She was the world record holder for her class. Plus I knew a guy who was a wrestler while I was in higher school who was maybe 5'8 and 140 lbs and he could squat about what you do. Box Squatted about 450. He was tiny as hell.
#14644 - leobaloy (06/28/2014) [-]
The 405 was my highschool squat and considering I've only gotten more toned since then I'm sure I could do more , although I've been 5'11 since freshman year of highschool, never grown since. Was about 125 at the time though
And I know strength is an objective thing, just in the majority's mind being skinny automatically makes you weak
#14646 - marinepenguin (06/28/2014) [-]
Toned doesn't necessarily mean stronger, you just have a lower body fat %. Although you could be. And that is one reason why I picked up lifting too.
I was 6'3 and 148 at one point. That was underweight for my height, I was athletic and strong for me size, held a power clean record for my high school football team even, but I was just generally tall and lanky.
#14638 - anonymous (06/28/2014) [-]
Where is this video, because on the WPF no female is squatting that much. I want to see if this is just you bullshitting or a reality.
#14641 - anonymous (06/28/2014) [-]
418 lbs for an equipped single, that is very impressive but please don't put bullshit like that. People will site that as fact if they don't know better.
