Actually, the original ran for 5 seasons from '91-'95, but the original producer wasn't associated with the last three seasons *cough cough* Man's Best Friend . It wasn't until 2003 that they wanted to reboot the series, except for an adult audience...

So no, the series didn't change halfway for older audiences, but it did change quite a bit due to Nick gaining rights to the show and getting new writers.
