Ever heard of the term "dominant strategy?" There is no reason for him to try anything else if he can do the quen combo and curbstomp everything in the game. It's easier, simpler, and gives him a better payout than anything else in the game, so he'd be dumb to try and use anything else.
However, despite that being the case, I did actually try to use the combat in all it's glory, and I was still let down. All of the other signs are at best, distractions for which to make opening's with your swords. You could never make a full magic build, and even when I tried and max igni, it barely scratched anything higher than a certain level, and even the enemies that were weak to it would almost never die to it, the only got stunned for a bit longer. Ranged combat was similar; the crossbow was never more powerful than being a softener for you to then close the gap with your sword.
Parrying was okay, but it's such a crapshoot and dodging has a very similar result for way less effort, so I almost never did it. The special power attacks for the sword (the spin and heavy attack) were almost completely unnecessary. They take way to much time to pull off and barely do any more damage than your basic quick and strong attacks. The spin would be useful if it didn't have such a long time to charge up and the hitbox actually worked. I try to use it against crowds of enemies, but they'd mostly stay out of range cause I was super slow while doing it, and then one would leap in and hit me somehow anyway, and leaving me hurt and with barely any stamina to recover.
And on a related tangent to levels, why the FUCK is their a level lock system in my single player RPG? I hate level locked systems in MMO's where they actually have a legitimate reason for having them. But in a singleplayer RPG where I'm the only one there? Why?
And they added insult to injury, and made it so that other than a handful of rare armor sets and the Witcher sets, they never had a full complete set of armor in the game. You know those badass looking gloves and boots you found that you just got to be able to wear? Yeah, those are the only things in the set, so your gonna have to find another, completely unrelated, random chestpiece and leggings to go along with it. I know it may seem like an absurd criticism, but imagine if Skyrim only had Ebony boots and gauntlets, or an imperial chestpiece. It just makes the game feel incomplete and leads to you having to mix and match several different pieces that rarely compliment each other.
Speaking of, because of the level based system for almost everything, you could end up with 2 exactly similar armor pieces, same name and all, but if it was a level higher or lower, or if they were gotten at two different places, the defense and sets bonuses could be
different, making you have to haphazardly mix and match things that didn't go together at all because it had higher stats. I mean seriously, look up guides for Witcher 3 armor sets and weapons. There is almost no concrete guide out there because there can't be; almost everything is RNG and is impossible to give any solid information on except for Witcher sets and certain high level dlc armor. The only other game to have completely random stats for similar armor sets was Destiny from what I know, and everybody I know criticized it for having a nonsensical drop system and random stats on everything, because it was hard to know what you were getting and if your effort would even be worth it because you could potentially get garbage that just happened to share the same name with your current gear. Most people I know, including myself, like a solid and well defined progression system that actually makes you know and feel like you are getting somewhere, instead of making you feel like your rolling the dice on what your getting every time you acquire something.
