For red cells, O- works for everyone! But their plasma isn't as valuable as yours is.
Blood is made up of 3 main components: red cells, plasma, and platelets. Every blood type has the 'best' donation... but if you don't wanna donate just one specific thing you can donate whole blood, or what is usually called the 'regular' donation, where they just take a pint of blood out and do not separate one certain component out. Most people choose that because they are afraid of getting the fluids put back in, but its very safe and actually pretty good for you.
Encouraging a plasma donation is just their way of maximizing your donation so you can help as much as possible. It's kind of like donating a 'pint' of your most helpful component. The O- donors can do a similar procedure that takes only red cells and gives plasma back. But anyone can do the 'regular' whole blood pint, as it has all components in it and can be separated later at the lab. They can still totally use your A+ red cells, but they might not have a big need for it right now, so they encourage you to donate all plasma instead of the mixed whole blood if you have the time, since your plasma is so beneficial.

It wasn't an unbearable pain, and the staff was very kind and quick to point out that they need to keep trying for the vein. They asked if it was hurting too much and I did tell them to stop when I felt like the pain was getting too bad; i really wanted to give blood. Thank you for your concern though. The 10 minutes was entirely my fault because I am used to needles and like I said I really wanted to give blood. I have given blood at this blood bank before and I will continue to give blood at this blood bank.
