if you want the long story message me again but basically eru iluvatar is the lotr equivalent of gods he got lonely and made the mayar, a subset of lesser gods they decided to make their own creations. i forget how many of the mayar exist but most of them took part in creating the sentient life on middle earth, dwarves were created by one of the mayar while both elves and men were created by eru iluvatar himself.

actually, Eru created Maiars as a support to Valars, who were the ones to create things. Gandalf was a Maia and he didn't create anything, same goes for 4 other wizards (Saruman, Radagast and 2 unknowns) and Sauron.
Valars on the other hand are the ones who created things, one of them, Aulë (who was making substances, the Arda was made of) was jelly that Eru created Elves and had humans coming up soon, so he created 7 Dwarven Kings in secret, then when Eru found out, Aulë was about to smash the Dwarves with the hammer, but seeing his saddness in the act, Eru allowed Dwarves to live, but on 2 conditions: they are not going to wake up (as in, come to life) before humans do and they are not allowed into Valinor (the undying lands) since they were not created by Eru (the exception was Gimli tho)

marioauditore, mind sharing why would you downvote me?
#87 - marioauditore (01/18/2015) [-]
I didn't have time to answer properly, so I just downvoted to show that I think what you said was incorrect.
Neither Valar or Maiar had the power of creation. Eru is the only one with that kind of power. In fact, that was the main reason for Melkor's betrayal: He wanted the power of creation for himself: "He had gone often alone into the void places seeking the Imperishable Flame; for desire grew hot within him to bring into Being things of his own" There is no real reason to make a distinction between Valar and Maiar based on "creation". We know that the Ainulindale was performed by all the Ainur, which includes both Valar and Maiar.
The creation of the dwarves is specular to Melkor's betrayal. Just like Melkor, Aule tries to bring into Being things of his own, but only manage to create empty shells. Aule should know that what he has done is just like what Melkor did. As Eru said: "Why hast thou done this? Why dost thou attempt a thing which thou knowest is beyond thy power and thy authority? For thou hast from me has a gift thy own being only, and no more, and therefore the creatures of thy hand and mind can live only by that being, moving when thou thinkest to move them, and if thy thought be elsewhere, standing idle". This is the strongest proof that the Ainur don't have the power to create new things. They can only imitate what is already there and modify it. As Tolkien would say, they have the power of subcreation. A power they share with mankind. Anyways, Eru realizes that the betrayal of Aule is different from the betrayal of Melkor. Melkor just want more power and is moved by arrogance and jealousy, while Aule is moved by love. Therefore, he infuse the Imperishable Flame into the dwarves, giving them an essence of their own.
A little nerdy note: Valar is the plural form of Vala, and Maiar is the plural form of Maia. So, the -s in Valars and Maiars is redundant.

But eru iluvatar approved of them though.
User avatar #39 - sanitarysan (01/17/2015) [-]
eru did not really approve or disapprove he just kinda did his own thing, when eru and his mayar sang the universe to be melkor wanted to sing his own song and made his own sentient creatures, this resulted in his song being distorted from the others, the dwarves were created by another mayar (don't know which one off the top of my head) out of jealousy.
