Experiment a bit with side stage rockets, they are key to sending anything big into orbit with enough fuel.

And maybe use the atomic engine once in orbit, they are very fuel efficient.

the closest I got was running out of electric charge on an unmanned probe and slingshotting myself around the moon into an orbit around the sun

Try landing on minmmus first, its smaller and has weaker gravity than the moon.
