My god...
User avatar #41 - dorner (09/02/2013) [-]
Of course it was a joke, bits are binary, meaning it's logically impossible to have a fraction of a bit. The reason I said that in the first place is because cases are important in some abbreviations, especially SI prefixes for example:
Y = yotta = 1000000000000000000000000
y = yocto = 0.000000000000000000000001
Similar relationships apply to some of the other prefixes

Mr Woody Allen, everybody!
User avatar #45 - dorner (09/02/2013) [-]
By joke I don't mean that it was supposed to be funny. It was to mock the fact that the creator of the content didn't use the correct abbreviations, in a similar way that people would mock content if they used incorrect grammar. The whole root of the argument is still based on whether or not MB is the same as mb, which it isn't. But as you pointed out common sense would say it's the same. It's the same as your and you're.

Jesus christ, do you want all the definitions?
1. Something said or done to evoke laughter or amusement, especially an amusing story with a punch line.
2. A mischievous trick; a prank.
3. An amusing or ludicrous incident or situation.
4. Informal
a. Something not to be taken seriously; a triviality: The accident was no joke.
b. An object of amusement or laughter; a laughingstock: His loud tie was the joke of the office.

I feel we're getting away from the crux of my argument, which was that no one would think mb meant milli-bits
You know, given that they don't exist
#30 - ryapr (09/02/2013) [-]
nobody except anyone with a knowledge of SI units, yes the measurement is absurd, and we don't use a unit of that size, but that is exactly why the starter of this thread made that joke. Your argument was pointless, units are units there is nothing else to it.

I thought this was a pedantic argument over how something should be written, why does advertising logic even come into it?
User avatar #25 - ryapr (09/02/2013) [-]
At the risk of false advertisement, companies must write the abbreviation correctly. I was assuming that you knew such. Since they sell in Mbps, for Megabits/sec then bits is in fact abbreviated in such a manner
