 Guess what bro. I recognize that sword inscription. It's from the movie "The Last Samurai". It says "Since ancient times to the present, God is with those who serve with dignity and honor"  今古有神奉志士 It supposedly says something along the lines of "Now and in ancient times a patriot is one observant of the divine," kind of anyway. It's intended to be Japanese but written in Chinese style. It's just some Hollywood bullshit they used in The Last Samurai. I'm pretty sure that even native speakers of both Chinese and Japanese would have trouble giving you an exact meaning. #73 -

The writing style used here looks like Kanbun, a method of writing used in the early middle ages in Japan that uses purely Chinese characters and Chinese syntax. In spoken Japanese it would read as: 今も古（いにしえ）にも神に奉ずる志士有り - imamo inishienimo kamini houzuru shishi ari Roughly translating to "Both now and in ancient times there are spirited men who dedicate themselves to the gods." I agree that most Japanese would have trouble with deciphering this, but to anyone interested in Kanbun it shouldn't pose too much of a challenge. | ||
