So what you're saying is you're against concealed carry? There's no reason they wouldn't be just as careful in a school as they would be carrying anywhere else. Arguably, they would be MORE careful in a school. And when was the last time you've heard of a concealed carry gun accidentally going off and killing someone ANYWHERE. The fact is that guns do stop a lot more crime then you realize, but you'll never hear about it. Because whether you want to hear it or not, the news corporations are all owned by private interests that control what is put on their news stations. And more often then not, what is reported on their news stations mirrors their political leanings

Yes, people are irresponsible with guns, and people are irresponsible with children, but teachers are by and far better with children than most of the population. People with state mandated training as per their permits are also safer with handguns than Bubba Joe with his deer gun at the range. Don't get me wrong, I'm sort of uneasy about guns near children, as many children have been killed while playing with guns that they think are unloaded or just toys. But if you really, and I mean REALLY want to stop these massacres from happening, let teachers carry. These people who do the mass shootings are looking for an easy target. And a school FULL of unarmed and vulnerable targets is like a dream for them. But that dream crashes down quickly when someone starts shooting back at them and they realize that someone with better training is actually trying to kill them.

I get what you mean ; good guys with guns do stop bad guys with guns. But I can only think of two massacres in schools as long as I've been alive, and in my opinion the risk isn't worth the gain.
On a side note, concealed carry is completely legal for every one in my state.

Nobody is saying arm the teachers, they're arguing that teachers with valid state concealed carry permits should be allowed to carry at work. They haven't gone out and killed anybody for no reason, why would they do it to your kid? Anyone who wants to kill a kid can obviously bring a gun anyways, who's gonna stop them?
#382 - rotinaj (05/01/2013) [-]
I think you're misunderstanding me ; I'm not worried about teachers committing murders, but rather I'm afraid of teachers committing manslaughter. As for the part about arming the teachers, I never took it that way ; I've seen the way some people act at shooting ranges and other places, and I know that I wouldn't want that type of gun-owner to be around children. What I'm trying to get at is that not all gun owners are safe, and if any one of them even with a permit could bring weapons to school, accidents are likely to happen, as apposed to school shootings which only happen about once per decade.

Your insecure in your ability to properly and safely operate a firearm. Which would be fine, if you weren't projecting that insecurity onto others, when someone who goes through the training and classes necessary to legally carry a firearm knows far more about firearm safety than you. If you're so paranoid that your child's teacher would shoot him, why are you letting him control your child's education?
#364 - rotinaj (05/01/2013) [-]
I'm completely confident in my own ability to be safe with weapons. I mean, I'm an avid hunter and gun-owner, believe it or not. I feel like it's somewhat justified to be paranoid that strangers are armed around my child. It's very very possible that a teacher won't know what they're doing with their weapon and cause an accident. And safety shouldn't be something anyone has to worry about for a public school.

"After allowing concealed carry on campus for an average of more than three years (as of June 2011), none of these 26 colleges (71 campuses) has seen a single resulting incident of gun violence (including threats and suicides) or a single resulting gun accident."

Statistically not true. There are armed guards in many schools, and many times they have stopped students trying to bring in weapons to school. Quit projecting your insecurities onto people you don't know
#336 - rotinaj (05/01/2013) [-]
The guy said "armed civilians", which to me implies parents and teachers ; not resource cops. I'm all for letting the dusty old rent-a-cops in schools carry weapons, because they know what they're doing. But letting any old person keep guns in school is simply stupid. You don't have any idea if some teacher doesn't know about firearm safety.
And can you tell me what "insecurities" I'm projecting onto others?
