That's actually very interesting, and explains why people react so differently to these kind of things. Here in Norway for example, we talk very casually about death, it's not unheard of people talking about it during a family-dinner. Likewise, children are introduced to the concept of death relatively early. In some way, you could say that it has made us slightly insensitive people, but we tend to handle times of crisis better (case in point; Utøya 2012).
TL;DR norwegians are cold-ass motherfuckers

I'm just going to add to your belief as well. Here, in America, we like to believe our government is protecting us (just try to follow here.. I know, it's hard to believe), so when something tragic happens and multiple deaths happen publicly, it's hard to see and think about. Death of an individual close to someone is easier to talk about/get over because it's either expected or an issue you would've had to face. But things like 9/11, Boston Marathon, or even school shootings, which happen suddenly, you aren't prepared, or feel some sort of guilt because those people went living their life as if they would see tomorrow. And it's the news channels not helping by publicizing it all.
That's how I feel about it. Hope it helped some more.
