We have scantrons here in Canada but it works with pretty much any pencil

I think it's got to do with the grade of the pencil, like how dark it is. I know some pencils in the US have just 'No. 2' and some have 2/HB, or something along those lines. If I remember correctly, H stands for Hardness and B stands for Blackness. Pretty sure No. 2 is just HB though.

It is kind of dumb, but as far as I know there's #1, #2, and (maybe) #3 pencils. The higher the number, the darker the lead it leaves behind. I've written with a #1 once and it was horrid. I like my writing to look darker so I hated it instantly. I think that's mostly why #2's are required for ScanTron, because they're dark enough to be read without destroying the answer sheet pressing down. Not sure if #3's exist or why they wouldn't work.

They do, but they are made of soft lead, graphite, or coal. The number system is a simple version of the "HB".

We hae the .5 and .7 lead for mechanical pencils as well. And (rarely) .9
