 I love the genre but I've only played a few, but here's some reviews in a shitty format I guess. Putting them in a spoiler to avoid a wall of text: Elite: Dangerous Pros: It's gorgeous, feels great, has cool details with all the ship stuff, planetary landing (with paid DLC), and is sort of an MMO so you'll often find other players flying around doing shit and you can do shit with your friends. Hyperspace is fucking cool. Cons: It's "a mile wide but an inch deep". There's 400 billion+ systems you can fly to, but is mostly just empty space, and even the systems that do have stations are empty except for the occasional station. Everything is just a grind to SLOWLY make money. X3: Albion Prelude (part of the X series) is probably my favorite space game ever and every other space sim should aspire to do as many things correctly like it did. Pros: It's singleplayer only, but it's very "full". Every single ship you own you can personally fly, including every capital ship. You can have a bunch of freighters trading between some stations in different sectors until you get enough money to buy a station and start trading with that, then expanding to even more stations, even connecting them together to make one big combination station. Cons: There's absolutely no ship customization. The only time you can get a ship with a badass paintjob is if you get your hands on a pirate variant of something, and even then it's an actual variant with its own pros/cons and not just a paintjob. IT'S SO SLOOOOOOW. Everything larger than a fighter moves like a dead elephant. To alleviate the slowness, there's a SETA device, which speeds the entire game universe up by up to 10x. It has a couple issues, but otherwise it's SOOOOOOO nice. And it's sold by just about every equipment dock and costs about 200 credits which is the equivalent of like $5. Also voices get EXTREMELY annoying. Fly a destroyer into a sector crowded with hostiles and be met with shitloads of "You think you can take me?!" and screaming. Like, just fucking get annihilated in peace, fuckface. X Rebirth It's the latest in the aforementioned X series, but it's the first one to use a completely new engine that works completely differently from all the previous games. Pros: Oh my god, oh my god is it fucking gorgeous. Holy shit. Sweet fucking christ. Unlike every other space sim game ever, stations aren't just one thing just sitting there being boring, THEY'RE FUCKING CITIES. It actually feels alive. If you blow up a bunch of freighters or sections of a factory or something, then you visibly damage the economy until they get fixed. It's pretty fast-paced compared to previous games. Like you can boost and shit. All the icons on the cockpit window move around the window; it's not just a rectangle they move around the edges of. There's this cool thing where if you fly close to a capital ship, you'll get caught in a sort of gravity field around it. Sounds dumb, but works great. This is a series that's been around for at least 20 years and knows how to do shit, even if it's only ever been made by a couple dozen Germans. Cons: Very buggy, menus are difficult to figure out, lots of unnecessary steps to do things. Like it's obvious little bits of the menus were poorly translated, unlike all the previous games. Voices still suck, but now you need to interact with people face-to-face and that is... that is just the worst thing ever. Fortunately, there are many mods to reduce this need. Horribly optimized. You had better have a very high-end computer to run this shit. I have a decent computer but only get like 10 fps on minimum settings. Unlike every game in the series before it (except the very first one), you're limited to flying a single ship. You CAN buy a few different cockpit styles, but it's not the same thing. Limited for space and those are the only ones I've put lots of hours into and I can't think of anything else to say about them. | ||

Standalone ShoC remake made by Dezowave.
It's pretty great, but it feels so empty (not a lot of secret loot spots, very few npcs wandering outside, cheap jumpscares that pose no threat).
