My guess is that he lost 3L total. I mean it's possible he lost 1L in combat and an additional 2 while being treated (of coures while he's being treated they would constantaly be giving him more). Thats what usually happens with trama patients, they end up losing more blood while being treated then they lose in the enviornment.

Ahh see i was reading it as "they made it out after 18 hours, and he lost 3L in total". Like he lost some in the engagement, during a medevac, and at the FOB (or wherever he would be taken for treatment).

Rather than reading it as "they made it out in 18 hours and he lost 3L of blood during the engagement". Because If thats what the story is saying then yeah... he'd be 6 feet under. I don't care how big this guy was, if you lose 3L without getting any of it replaced, you're dead

I've learned that even mentioning being a combat medic is futile with some people. Someone argued with me for days (slow response time) thinking that someone wearing a steel plate would die from the broken rib a shotgun slug would cause almost instantly and therefore there was no point in wearing it. Some people are that stupid.

What did it stand for? There are a few were were taught and if the letters were rearranged it isn't clicking for me.

Breathing, Blood, Shock, Fractures, Burns, Head injury. Basically, how to assess the patient quickly and determine the best response. I'm sure this is a very basic version of assessment too

A quick exam is the HABCs (Hemorraging, airway, breathing and circulation for the curious non-medical folks following along) and the full body exam has BUDS (bleeding, urine, defacation, stuff) for the pelvic area, then you have DCAP BTLS for overall body (Deforminity/ discoloration, crepitus/contusions, abrasion/avulsion, penetration/punctures, burns, tenderness, lacerations, swelling) PEARL for the eyes (Pupils equal and reactive to light) and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head.

My mom just completed a nursing program which included basic trauma/triage/emergency room care type things and i'm not sure even she had this many acronyms. Is there a jingle for it or is it just drilled into you until you hear it echoing in your dreams like general orders?

Pretty much drilled in. And those are just trauma assessments. Once you get into medical you have SOAP notes, OPQRST, SAMPLE and I don't even know what to call the paperwork for a battlefield patient since the abbreviation has probably changed twice since training.

It is more that they keep finding different ways to simplify it but make it more detailed every time. The one that had just become obsolete when I was in training was twice as long and detailed but half as efficient as the new one because it eliminated so much unnecessary writing by just putting two human body outlines to mark and describe injuries.

lol i spent high school hanging around ww2 and vietnam vets in njrotc and did arotc for a semester, I am too familiar with military regulations and the redundant,often laughable but required nature of paperwork. The med forms for going into the college rotc's was a chore and a half, with electronic database this, paper form that, and every now and then a recruiter calling up to make sure you did that form that was due 2 weeks ago. the US Military: We say gallant things and have cool toys but we're only 70% sure of what we're actually up to

Year I realized this myself after having read the fallout wiki. I'm not sure still if it's actually necessary for their survival because it'd be kind of counter-productive to create these synthetic humans that need food and water when there's already plenty actual humans to feed in the wasteland. I wonder if radiation also affects them at all because similarly why would one replicate a human weakness in Fallout's dire times. It could be that the survival elements are in the protagonist's head during the story which means he/she would only think sustenance is necessary but that would mean the reveal that you're an android should happen near the end not in the vault where you start but it also creates a plot hole because you need to be able to die of these survival elements. It's part of the Fallout games.
