By that logic, every black person in the world should hate every white person because of slavery, everyone in the world should hate Germany for the rest of the human race's existence, Italy should hate the Scandinavian countries for the fall of Rome to the Barbarians.
Basing your opinion of a group of people based on the actions of their ancestors is not only unfair but it would mean hating pretty much every other person on the planet. What you're suggesting is a slippery slope my friend.
#85 - iloveburzum (09/02/2013) [-]
A country, and a race of people, is slightly different from an organisation.
Should we eventually tolerate nazis or neo-nazis because only their ancestors did wrong? (if they still call themselves nazis, and have pretty much the same beliefs)
I doubt it. If a group of people called christians went around torturing and persecuting people because whatever, should we really just go "oh well, it was in the past"
I don't think so. They got away with it as well. At least the nazis and germany suffered punishment.

What's wrong with Christian's beliefs?
Love and toleration are such evil concepts that you can compare Christians with Nazis?
And by your logic we should hate every single communist and socialist for what the URSS did, but wait, you're probably American so of course you hate every single commie.
#132 - iloveburzum (09/03/2013) [-]
I'm scottish, so have no real problems with commies. Other than the general hatred and intolerance that applies to scotland>everyone.
I would also suggest that the nazis had some good concepts as well. Just because the bibles got the whole love and tolerati- wut, tolerant? Not really, but i'll let it slide this time. Anyway, just because it mentions love and tolerance, doesn't forgive it for all the other stuff. Women should be punished for being raped, slavery is okay, pedophilia is fine, gays go to hell, etc etc.
How about tolerate the followers, punish the organisation? I don't give two hoots about christians either way, I just felt like supporting the guy above me's comment.

I was not referring to the Bible as a whole, I was referring to Christ teachings (love your neighbour as yourself, who is without sin cast the first stone, etc...), his teachings contradicted a lot of the punishment oriented teachings of the Old Testament, and the core of his teachings are love and tolerance.
And yea, tolerate the followers and punish the organization would be the way to go, and you may not care about Christians but the comparison you were doing was just unfair because the core of both doctrines are completely different.
#135 - iloveburzum (09/03/2013) [-]
Okay. I still fairly comfortable comparing the church (any of them) to the nazis.
As a percentage of total world population, they probably killed about equal numbers of people, taking into account the crusades, and the far longer period of time they've been around.
#136 - anonymous poster (09/03/2013) [-]
Fair enough, I don't like the church either.

Well that is how I felt too, I assume you went to School in the 80's 90's or 2000's? because Catechesis was horrible and those were dark times for formation in the Church, but we are changing and getting better at it. The whole "In the light of Vatican II" shit is over
#46 - anonymous poster (09/02/2013) [-]
But they are responsible for what they themselves have done. And I am fairly sure "over the last 1500 years" does not exclude that last 60.
#72 - Ruspanic (09/02/2013) [-]
My point is that it's absurd to hold Christians accountable for the Crusades and the Inquisitions and so on, as if they have to "make up for" those things in order to deserve respect. Bullshit.
Individuals in general are not responsible for actions committed by other individuals within the same group, unless they actually raised or taught those people to do what they did.
#15 - foelkera (09/02/2013) [-]
all sorts of other people of other beliefs did all sorts of crazy shit. It happened in the past, it's already over. Bitching about shit from 2000 years ago does nothing. Bitching about shit going on now does nothing. Getting off your ass and fucking doing something fucking does something. If you don't like persecution then stop persecution. Whining on the internet about religion doesn't stop anything.
Get the fuck off your ass and get some shit done.

Hmm. They seem like the right words, but they don't really call of the idea of 'all x are y because some x are y'.e.g. All Christians hate gay people regardless of which Christian Denomination they fall under. It feels more like 'My religion is the one true religion, all others are wrong.' i.e. extremes of any religion (e.g. radical muslims) I'm not saying that you're wrong by the way. Anyway thanks for helping.
#23 - Ruspanic (09/02/2013) [-]
"'My religion is the one true religion, all others are wrong" isn't extremism or bigotry, that's just having a belief. Obviously, you think all of your beliefs are true - if you didn't think they were true, you wouldn't believe them. Therefore any belief that contradicts your beliefs must not be true.
#70 - Ruspanic (09/02/2013) [-]
wut. What the fuck does this have to do with racism? This is the nature of all beliefs, unless you're extremely insecure in your beliefs. If two beliefs contradict each other, they can't both be correct. It's not a "terrible attitude or "ignorance", it's just the implications of a logical contradiction.
If I believe the Earth goes around the sun, and someone else believes the Sun goes around the Earth, we can't both be right because our beliefs contradict each other. So naturally I think he is wrong, and he thinks I am wrong. That's the definition of a belief: if I believe something, then I think it is true, and contradictory things are false.
Of course, the truth in that can actually be verified, so for a more relevant example: if I believe Jesus is the literal son of God, while Muslims and Jews think he is not, then I must believe Muslims and Jews are wrong.
Relativism is an idiotic stance to take.
#144 - riddlerboy (09/03/2013) [-]
OK, so if someone believes that gay marriage is wrong, and someone believes it is correct, who is right? are they both wrong then? your examples only apply to subjects where there is only right and wrong, what about things where you can take many stances? If your religion believes in honour killings, does that make it right?
#162 - Ruspanic (09/03/2013) [-]
No, believing something to be true or right does not make it so.
I offer no opinions as to who is actually right. Sometimes that can be objectively determined, sometimes you have to go with whoever has better reasoning, and sometimes there's really no way to tell. Sometimes all people are wrong.
All I'm saying here is that if someone is, say, a Christian, it is completely unreasonable of you to fault them for regarding all other religions as false.
"My religion is the one true religion, all others [that contradict mine] are wrong" is an idea that any religious person must accept in order to be intellectually consistent.
