Thousands of years ago most mainstream religions versions of an afterlife consisted of just a bleak existence on an endless plain or something of the like. The Jews were one of the first religions to adopt the idea of a good afterlife in heaven, and they were nomadic outcasts until the later Egyptian years. Even after they became known, few people adopted the idea of a happy afterlife until Jesus rolled around 2013 years ago and started up Christianity, which didn't become mainstream until Constantine made it the official religion of the Byzantine empire in 313. So no, people weren't driven to succeed by fear of hell because hell wasn't popularized until awhile after Jesus died.

Actually, Jesus was around 30 years of age 2013 years ago. C.E. started around the time of Jesus' death, not birth.

OK, please tell me how the dark ages, religious wars, and religious persecution have helped us advance. ill give you that in old times people may have needed a reason to be civil to one another but do we really need it now? would society collapse tomorrow if everyone in the world suddenly forgot about all religion?
the only reason religion is around today is because it has had to give so much.
the core system of religion is a denial of the acquisition of knowledge, example: someone asks a preacher why the world exists and the preacher says "god does it" not because its the truth (it may be what he believes as the truth) but, because it sounds a whole lot better than "i don't know." but then you cant learn anything. god as an infinite being is fundamentally unknowable to us and therefore ends any new knowledge we would gain from a question. "i don't know" is far more necessary to the advancement of humanity, because it leads us to "i want to know"; rather than "god did it" which leads us to "i cant know".

i'd also like to add that from a moral standpoint god, as an intellectual being, is fundamentally immoral. the idea the "sinners" are only punnished after death by an all powerful being is stupid; he could do something to stop people from being bad, yet does nothing. so you end up with a god who either A) closes the door on child molesters and says "im sooo going to punish you for raping that child, but im still going to let you do it" or B) god sends the child molester to rape the child.

my two cents. pic related.

It is a point of view, and in some part I believe it truly did happen like you just said.
However, Mankind invented religion. That just makes me believe that maybe we could have made it through without all the set backs religion has caused.

Religion was used to control people using their fears of things they didnt understand. Not to keep them from doing good and bad.

Its a lot easier to keep a peasent starving from lack of food and being treated like shit bassically from revolting or being like fuck this shit and not helping the state with his farming etc if he thinks he will be rewarded forever when he dies.

Look at religious extremists now a days.

They are happy to have tough lifes and then kill themselves prematurely for the cause of their leader because they think they will be rewarded forever in death.

Your entire argument is rendered null by these two words: "Religious Wars".
#39 - vindicted (03/10/2013) [-]
his argument isn't rendered null people would of warred for any reason
religion was just the favored excuse of the time

i actually like to look into what life would be like with/ without religion
boiled down if for some reason religion was lost to the word around the 14th century humanity would be roughly 120 years advanced as it would bar several long spread religious animosities / wars that began around that time which set man back

but if it had never existed at all we would be still in straw huts, as religion was without a doubt the strongest catalyst for acceptance of a foreign stranger which lead to the development of civilization as we know it

a little information goes a long way

well in some Norse cultures " before hell and all that" they preferred to make peace with surrounding tribes. Yes some went to war and all, but most Vikings were rather civil as long as you respected their ways.

Except ancient religions didn't focus much on "Hell". They had an underworld, and punishments, but no eternal torture for stupid rules
User avatar #14 - reican (03/10/2013) [-]
you can kill a man who has done you a misdeed, but to a man who has shown you a deed you will show the same deed onto the next.

which was better than
"You shan't have other gods than me! then I will punish you!!" which makes the God of Christianity sound like an arrogant prick.
