But the railroad is willing to kill families. woman and children to save some machines that MIGHT be sentient and reduce humanity back to living in the waste land. They're really just PETA. At the end when you cause an uprising the railroad kills EVERYONE in the institute, all the families, everything AND destroys the fusion reactor that could literally save mankind. All on the notion that the synths living in hardship deserve more freedoms then the people that made them. The synths that get free at the end are like "wait this is the surface?! holy shit this sucks?!" The institute only kills the railroad leaders. And since you become the head of the institute after your son you can potentially make the changes to how the synths are being treated note that's just head canon not real thing Cuz i was all "protect sentient life" until I became the leader of the Institute then I was like fuck the railroad there's another way. Also the fact that the institute was only messing with people on the surface to build the reactor means the institute is going to disappear from the common wealth. So in the end Me being in control of the minute men as a standing army and aid group combined with the resources of the institute could actually better humanity.
