1) no it's not, its like the same as clipping toenails
2) no it's not, if you own a snake purely because it's dangerous you evidently don't care about the animal.

I hate people who think of animals more as decorations than friends.
User avatar #163 - jajathezombie (08/29/2013) [-]
But snakes aren't ever going to be your friend. They lack the psychological capacity to love.
User avatar #107 - northleech (08/29/2013) [-]
Dont know how it is with snakes. But treating a dog as a friend rather than a dog is one shitty way of training your dog. It'll by default take over as the leader of the pack over you if you dont take that role from it.
User avatar #141 - nogphille (08/29/2013) [-]
you never discipline your friends when they misbehave?
you don't reward them when they treat you well? (if you don't, you're a lousy friend)

this is called conditioning, the same you would do to a dog.

i meant as in they need there fangs to eat, i dont feed them pre dead rodents, it helps keep there natural instincts in tack, and how would you like it if someone took a file and ground down your teeth cause they thought you didnt need them
#89 - snakefire (08/29/2013) [-]
Their fangs grow back, our teeth don't.

Cut their fangs, then in a month when they're ready to eat again their fangs will be back.
After they've eaten and digested their food, cut their fangs again and hold them. Repeat.

You and I have very different ideals on animal abuse. If you have an animal locked in a cage, never handle it, and never let it out, you're abusing it.

Alternatively cutting its fangs allow it the freedom of exercise
User avatar #91 - redneckhokage (08/29/2013) [-]

#92 - snakefire (08/29/2013) [-]
It really depends on the snake.

My pink speckled would ONLY EAT once a month. sometimes longer.

My ball python on the other hand eats weekly.

I've had diamnondbacks and they eat either once every two weeks or a month.
I wouldn't know about the cobra though.
User avatar #113 - doooublebaass (08/29/2013) [-]
Ever heard of Raymond Hoser? Look into him. Cutting fangs is illegal in most of the world because it counts as either cosmetic surgery or as cruelty. As is venomoiding (surgery to remove venom glands)

If you're going to get something dangerous, then accept it as a full package. The fangs on vipers especially are essential to the way they eat. Ever watched a C. Atrox eat? They walk their fangs along it, as their jaws are different from, say, a colubrid or elapid to make space for the large, hinged fangs.
User avatar #161 - redneckhokage (08/29/2013) [-]
im not against removing the glands as much as cutting the fangs, since its a one time procedure. but it can cause complications if not done right
User avatar #164 - doooublebaass (08/29/2013) [-]
Removing the venom glands can cause all sorts of problems.

Read up on Raymond Hoser and his procedure, and I can guarantee you'll be against it.

I don't have the article to hand, unfortunately, but I'll give you a rough idea.

He cools the snakes in a fridge to put them into cold torpor (Effectively, their brains function too slowly at that temperature to make them dangerous) and removes the fangs, then the venom glands through the holes left by the fangs.

Cold torpor is NOT anaesthesia, and he only does it to reduce the danger to himself. A horrible, horrible man.
User avatar #171 - redneckhokage (08/29/2013) [-]
theres other ways of doing it, the correct procedure is anesthesia, then cutting holes behind the head or in the roof of there mouth, removing the glands, then putting implants in so there head doesnt droop. i would rather not do it, its just better than contantly cutting fangs
User avatar #194 - doooublebaass (08/29/2013) [-]
True. But really, at the end of the day, it's not worth it at all.

I'm not an animal rights nut by any means, but I can't justify performing surgery of any variation (In this case, to cut fangs, you'd need some sort of anaesthesia to be completely safe) purely for the sake of making my life easier.
I've done some work in a zoo (Which I'm not allowed to name for legal reasons) and the O. Hannah was absolutely amazing - I just couldn't see myself harming him to make my job easier. We had trap hides for them (Big, wooden boxes with a door you could pull on a string from outside of the enclosure to snap the door shut) and that helped a lot.
User avatar #200 - redneckhokage (08/29/2013) [-]
i have too, and completely agree with you, most of the stuff i have are breeders, ive worked in florida and my father was a big time dealer in the Carolinas.
User avatar #207 - doooublebaass (08/29/2013) [-]
I guess it's all down to how much risk you're willing to/have to take. If you're working with 2-300 snakes a day, then I can see it being a viable option.

Any collection I've worked in was far less, though, so I had time to learn each animal's likes and dislikes so that I didn't get bitten. The King at the zoo didn't even really hood up around us - he just sort of did his own thing.
User avatar #208 - redneckhokage (08/29/2013) [-]
kings are clever as hell though, they will lure you into a false sense of safety and turn unexpectedly one day, that applies to most cobras though
User avatar #279 - doooublebaass (08/29/2013) [-]
Won't let me reply to your other comment. Yeah, a copperhead. It just hated everything, and it was quicker than you'd think for it's body build. I absolutely love them, though. I'm hoping to find a friendly one.
User avatar #234 - doooublebaass (08/29/2013) [-]
True. We did still generally avoid him, but he didn't mind if we had to move him around. Shame the money was piss poor, or I'd still likely be there.

The only snake that's ever truly made me wonder if I was going to get bitten was a A. Contortrix. Scary bastard, he was - hated everything that moved.
User avatar #264 - redneckhokage (08/29/2013) [-]

User avatar #114 - doooublebaass (08/29/2013) [-]
Also, this.

Cobras tend to have shorter fangs, too, which are harder to get at - meaning that in the process of trying to remove/cut them down, you'd wind up getting yourself bitten.
