In terms of ideals, the ideology have reversed since Lincoln's time. They've solidified with Reagan and Nixon.

But yea, it is wrong to do that since the ideologies changed.

Ok thanks for the insight! Just wanted to make sure people don't think Lincoln and Trump hold the same ideals.

Although it is equally ignorant to think Hillary is the same as FDR.

>>#5, The only thing that has changed is the stance towards large federal government.
Virtually every subject on this list was nonexistent in the time of lincoln, Teddy. even FDR.
The federal government simply wasn't involved in healthcare, gay marriage, abortion, the death penalty, Economic ideas, or social planning.
You've got to remember that there was no federal income tax until 1913. The federal government largely did not involve itself in the affairs of the states. Gays were so secretive to the point of essentially being non-existent publicly, it was so difficult having a healthy child in the first place that abortion was an emergency medical procedure, the majority of doctors were field trained medics from the army, not licensed practitioners, and the US needed immigrants to build infrastructure and railroads. There wasn't medicare, welfare, or an EPA. The populace was more concerned about living as in staying alive than the creature comforts of today. So from FDR until now is what you need to look at for party perspective. The rest of it is virtually irrelevant to modern life. The federal government these days is more concerned with taking back federal property than giving it to anyone willing to homestead a piece.

If you want to read up, you can google speeches and even party platforms at the time of each president. JFK would probably fall under republican. FDR is the staple of democrat. Jimmy Carter was a president in name only (pretty much the worst president of the post industrial era) Nixon was on the edge. Reagan is basically the definition of modern republican.
As far as social issues go: Lincoln would be far right today, as would teddy and wilson.
FDR was in some respects and not in others. JFK and Clinton are both moderates, and Nixon actually was a crook, despite is claims otherwise.

From what I remember learning it was really solidified with Reagan and Nixon. Before them the ideals were actually reversed of what they are today

The switch started long before Reagan and Nixon. I would say that FDR was a major force in this change. He is the one that introduced Social Security. By today's standards, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln would most likely be Democrats but old Democrats, like Andrew Jackson, would most likely be Republican. Woodrow Wilson, on the other hand, would be considered rather moderate today, although possibly a little left leaning.

But isn't the post wrong either way? Because it places the presidents in the parties simply because that was their party back in the day by name, but I'm fairly certain the Republican party Lincoln was part of is not the same as the one we know today. I thought it resembled more of the current democratic party?

After many years of "LOL" threads on /v/, and the already endless spew of loss edits, each stupider than the last one, I have to say the joke wore thin for me a long time ago. And of course like every other meme nowadays, people have to try to think of a way to turn almost literally EVERYTHING they see into a stupid loss edit.

Anyway my rant's over now, keep doing your thing I'm not exactly gonna try and stop you.
