You can't straight up just die from lack of sleep. To put it in terms of computers, when you're awake, information floods your "RAM" this is essentially useless. You can use it for a little while, but its useless. When you sleep, your brain sorts through the floods of short-term memory and rationalizes it. If you are awake for too long, your brain's like "oh fuck man, there's too much shit going on" in order to conserve energy, it will start to shut other bodily organs down so it can continue to process. If I'm not mistaken, the chemical that is responsible for the sorting of short-term memory during sleep (I can't remember the name; it's not melatonin, thats what makes you drowsy) can theoretically be collected and given in small shots to make sleep entirely arbitrary, because the needed task was completed by the injection.
