sausageparty (05/03/2013) [-] The people who go there are mainly rich assholes trying to gain prestige. These universities will accept people with money while talented poor people will have to be lucky enough to get a scholarship. We don't really have any of that kind of institutions in Europe as most European countries prefer to have tax funded education equally accessible to everyone. #64

rankus (04/27/2013) [-] The massive growth in China that you are referring to has little to do with its social programs (which they are actually ratcheting up btw). Its due to an economic idea called the convergence theory, in which poorer countries will essentially play catch-up with extended periods of high GDP growth until they reach per capita levels similar to other leading countries. http://en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Convergence_(economics) Also, since you seem to lack a grasp on other nations healthcare systems, I would like to recommend you view "Sick Around The World", a 50 minute program by Frontline. You can find it on Netflix or for free online. It features an incredibly knowledgeable guy named T.R. Reid, I think you'll find it very informative. And if your feeling even more adventurous, please check out the recent 28 page Time article called "Bitter Pill", its about healthcare costs in America. Until then, please hush. #79

ratiller (04/27/2013) [-] Convergence theory Could explain part of china's growth, however it's been disproved before, originally convergence theory had Japan coming out ahead of the U.S and that never happened. It's too simple a model to try to predict what causes growth. calling what china's GDP "playing catchup" is a laughable understatement, they grow 10% a year we've been shrinking and marginally expanding the last few years. why? we're so far in debt from out beautiful socialist programs eating away at money we don't have (Wait for the baby boomers then we'll all think how great these days were when social security was only 20% of our budget and debt was only 7% They have no "social safety net" so their propensity to save is much much higher than ours, which is actually linked fairly concretely with economic growth by itself. not to mention Hong Kong is the worlds freest market, which stimulates trade. Which leads to growth and health care reform? have you actually read the responses to that little article? everyone wants a fair market, which is what we should have one with transparency and not ridiculous health premiums for no reasons. Not single payer in a society where we'd be supporting 30 million people who do nothing to go to the hospital for free you can call me whatever and say what you want, but people who spout off "you don't understand xxxx" without offering a valid argument or really any argument at all, aren't part of a discussion, you're just being childish and contributing next to nothing China is flourishing under communist regime. It's economy is heavily regulated. Yes, they don't have social programs, and the majority of people live in absolute shit conditions. Yes, they manage to make a lot of money from their heavily regulated economy, but at what cost? It is true that human nature is to be selfish, but is it not also true that every "good" man in history has strived to abolish human nature, and to uphold the ideals of helping your fellow man? In the end, I suppose that while the point I come from is flawed, and social programs cost too much on such large scales to be economic... I don't even know where I'm going with this. I concede to you, that idealism isn't effective in running a country. *sigh* Like I said, I lost where I'm going with this. Really, I just wish people wouldn't be such assholes to each other. I live off of Social Security because over the past five years I've been out of school for four of them. I have mental problems that prevent me from going out in public much, and I know many people would just say suck it up... but I can't. Honestly, this whole topic just hits too close to home for me. I spend my days surfing the internet wishing I could put my intellect to better use, and lamenting the fact that I can't deal with people... Sorry, I've rambled. You've won the argument sir, and that's all that matters here on the internet. I just wish people at large would be kind. #54

ratiller (04/27/2013) [-] it's not a bad thing to wish we could all be kinder, not at all, but when you force people to be kind it's not kindness it's thievery with a smile, we can all hope somewhere down the line it works out for everyone, until then power disparities will always exist so someone will always be screwed. also i'm sorry, i know more than enough about social anxiety disorder and the like to understand you can't just suck it up (not to be a dick i understand you don't want to discuss this anymore but china isn't communist it's state capitalist) You're right, I didn't read up enough on it. China is capitalist. Suppose you learn something new everyday, or at least refine and correct old information. You're right. Just wish the power disparities weren't so vast. | ||
