Ok, the Slide. The hammer is only the little part at the back of a revolver right?

all guns have a hammer, some self-loaders have an internal hammer. Auto-loaders (same as self loaders) have a slide that works using recoil and springs to chamber a new round. When the slide goes back, it pushes the hammer back down into a ready position. For this reason, there are very very few double action automatics (a double action meaning you can pull the trigger to both ready the hammer and fire the gun). So two things could've happened here, chambered bullet but put the hammer up for safety and forgot to re-cock or never chambered bullet and was trying to pull slide back to do so.

Hope this helps

Yea, I figured he never actually chambered a bullet, and was pulling the slide back in the video after the first failed shot.

I mislabeled the slide as the hammer, causing confusion.

Yep, I saw that and figured I might as well spread some gun info. More you know, the safer you are.

Exactly. Which is why I wanted someone to explain.
I like guns, just haven't had the learning time with them.

May I suggest "World of Guns" a free downloadable game from steam. Teaches you how to disassemble and reassemble guns and you can use it's slow motion firing stage to see how they operate. Very interesting.

Because of that game I can disassemble and reassemble an AK-47 as quick as some members of the military, despite never being trained in it's use. To be fair, I am from Texas so it's kind of in my genes

You rack the slide, not the hammer. This opens up the ejection port, essentially putting a new round of ammuntion into the chamber.
There's also a hammer on a normal handgun. It is however only used for the triggerpull itself.

Deleted cause of missing picture.
