Funnyjunk doesn't think Lordraine is correct.

What Funnyjunk thinks and what is actually true aren't always the same thing. I'm just amused that somebody is going to get an alert for a top comment by reiterating a point Niel made that doesn't even address what I said.

He is correct in refuting a belief that we are alone based on a small sample. But that is not evidence toward other life existing. If this is his only argument, then yes its a fallacy. But more likely he would present the estimated number of stars and planets that exist and weigh that against the odds there would be conditions for life and how likely life is to self produce.

Carl Sagan discussed an experiment for the chances that life self produces in Cosmos. Source: Youtube (watch?v=dGenk99YDwY at about 45:00).

but he wasn't wrong did you actually read it? he essentially said "we don't know, we need more data" like you wanted him too. yeah sure he made his guess about life out there being high but there's a lot of guess work involved with science

He isn't wrong, though. The number of galaxies in our universe number in the hundred billions, likely even more. In each of those galaxies, there are an innumerable amount of solar systems. This puts the chances of there not being any other life in the universe at practically zero. I will give you that he doesn't address this in the quotes above, but I would be very surprised if it doesn't come up shortly afterwards.
