I'm not very good at this.

I was the same way. My tactic was this: when a teacher puts you into a group or partners, smile a lot (not TOO much) and try to make conversation. I remember my first day of freshman year, nobody in my first period class knew anyone else. I was put next to a girl that seemed friendly so I started to talk to her and we became good friends, she was the first friend I made in high school. Over two years later, she told me that when we first met she developed a huge crush on me because I was so kind to her. This was amazing to me because I was always awkward and quiet. I still kind of am.
TL;DR Be open and talk to people, you might make a friend. I made one awesome friend and it turns out all of his friends were the same and we're a pretty close group now. They're all shameless nerdy gamers. Fuck yes.
WAY TOO LONG; DID NOT READ be nice to people and you may inadvertently meet someone like yourself. I thought I was the only lonely nerdy kid until I met the other ones.

Join a club you are interested in. You will probably meet people that are "the quiet kids" that have received the same advice, or meet a whole different group of people that can bring you out of your shell.

not a huge fan of five finger death punch and i went to an avenged sevenfold concert once and it was filled with emos but i love slipknot metalica and slayer
