I am from the U.S. and my girlfriend's mom is a teacher of 25 years. It's true she has a longer contract, but I've just never heard it described as "tenure" like a professor would have. Maybe it's different by state.

To be totally honest, the unions in my state hardly ever fire anyone, regardless of age. Teachers just have to teach all day with no prep period or class sizes get enormous.

That's the problem with cutting the education budget, don't blame the unions. They're the reason we have 8 hour work days and weekends. They're also the reason we don't have sweatshops in the developed world
Not that unions don't get power hungry but there's an obvious problem with the education system in the states and it isn't the collective bargaining rights of teachers

Not embracing technology doesn't make you a bad teacher. Some of my favorite junior high teachers were older.
Plus, that's true of every union, although I've never heard of secondary teachers having tenure.

I guess I should rephrase my statement; its not what's wrong with unions, it just points out what is wrong with unions. The young, enthusiastic, and innovative teachers are fired when the inflexible older teachers are kept. Teachers' poor technological skills are just a symptom of the real issue. I'm not saying all old teachers are bad, just that a young teacher generally can better understand their students. It sounds like you're not 'Murican, but in the land of the free, any teacher can get tenure.
