Romney's success had a lot to do with his demeanor. If you watched the debate, you'd have noticed how Romney looked directly at Obama nearly the entire speech whereas Obama spent most of the time looking down. Also, the way Romney talked to Obama was akin to a teacher educating a student. On top of this, Romney managed to control the flow of the debate.

Romney came off as educated and principled while Obama seemed to be confused and unprepared.
