One of the ways to stabalize an empire is to unite it under popular rule, as well as a common religion. Which he did. By combining original Christianity with other popular pagan beliefs of the time. Thus the Trolling. Many of the things modern Christians regard as holy, are in fact pagan based practices injected into their faith for geo-political reasons.

You and I are arguing the same point really. You're just viewing history through a more Christian based lense, and I a more secular one.

Take a Roman history class.

Constantine legalized it for popularity reasons. The persecution of Christians had stopped long before, and it was already "exploding" religion. In fact, by the time Constantine took the throne is was one of the two most popular faiths of his region and time. (Like I mentioned before).

Don't get me wrong. Dude did a lot for Christianity. Which is why your Catholic history class talked him up so much. But he also did a lot to confuse Christianity's authentic roots and he incorporated a LOT of pagan ritual, imagery, and celebrations into Christian faith.

Again. Read a book.

It was not legalized for his own popularity. He did so to unite the people of the Roman empire under a common religion, thus bringing a greater sense of stability to the already disintegrating empire.

Actually, the major persecution of early christians stopped under Augustus' rule, long before Constantine was crowned Emporer, and even longer before he converted in 312AD.

Constantin pronounced himself the ultimate spiritual leader of BOTH major religions of his time- Christianity and a cult of sun worship. He worked to unify both under his rule. Probably because its easier to be the God-king of one faith, rather than two. Thus he moved Christmas to the 25th, a day that was a feast celebration for the sun worshippers. He moved Christian sabboth to SUNday rather than Saturday as it originally was, again, for the sun worshippers. He also comissioned a lot of religious art. that combined the two religions, with Christian figures surrounded by beams of sunlight and bright halos.

So yeah, I stick with my original statement.
Read a book.

Take a Catholic Church history class.

Constantine was the first Roman emperor to legalize Christianity. Therefore: he was the one who made it so that Christians could no longer be executed for their faith. He was the first Roman emperor to do so. The persecutions may have lessened under Augustus, but it was only because he chose not to enforce religious laws as strictly as other emperors.

Constantine also took lengths to make Christianity a sort of unofficial "official" religion of the empire. This made the number of Christians explode.

And he moved the date of a holy day. What a troll.
