If you took the time to actually write a couple books the cost for each to publish would still be less than what it costs to get any degree in college.
But obviously you aren't going to listen to anyone's advice and odds are you're lying just to make that post.

Write about giant spiders that live in a world filled with hornet riders. These hornet riders would of come from a far distant land that was once the greatest empire in the world, but some event happened that destroyed them all. Except one family of hornet riders that lived off the coast of the mainland where most of the story takes place on an island.
Make it so most of your characters die in weddings or when they get too popular.

Try becoming decent on the internet w an audience like FJ first as u study. If no success, change majors. Learn somethin else entirely.
Bonus: get into politics, raise minimum wage, make a law forcing the top 1% to actually trickle down all the money they keep piling up.

You don't need to go to College to become an author... it's rather pointless. School can't teach you to imagine. I'm an amateur author (inb4 I write fanfics, I don't, I just don't want to publish) as a upcoming Sophomore in college. It helps that I am a History major so I have the free time, but an English major won't really teach you anything you shouldn't already know.

That is awesome that you are going doing that. It is a great major and being an author is a prestigious career that is very fulfilling. I wish you all the best.
HOWEVER, here is why I rant. What I strongly disagree with and will NOT put up with is that just in case IF you do not make it as an author. Just in case you don't get a good paying job with your degree, you better not speak a word about why the system is so fucked up. I better not hear a peep saying that "The world is so tough and oppressive, and the rich just keep getting richer, and it's all corporate greed, and it's not at all my fault I don't have a good job or live comfortably because it is someone else out there that is screwing me over". This is 100% your decision, that is what is so great about going to college, YOU have to choice to select your future.
TL;DR- Life is full of choices. Understand that going against the odds and setting yourself up in a field with a large amount of risk is NOT the safest way to money. However if it isn't all about money, and fulfillment is what you are looking for, fantastic, just don't go barking at everyone else who wants to play it safe.

I mean. I guess if you wanna just spend time getting degrees? The fuck do you do with an Art History degree then? Anyways, I was thinking more about return on investment. You can actually get that with an English degree; tons of jobs will take English degrees. Same with Accounting, Engineering, or the Business degrees. Anything art/philosophy related is kind of shit.
#110 - mads (05/23/2014) [-]
Not really if you get to do a Masters in Art History, which can be done with 3 years Fine art and 2 years Art History you can go into Art Critique, which you can make £78,500. You can also go into pretty much any social science/social work field. Most management jobs etc. It's not as crap a degree as people make out. It just opens a different world of employment that you don't really hear about unless you are in 'that world' so to speak

Other English major here. I spent three years at a tech school thinking I wanted to do programming. It was the most tedious and depressing work I've ever done.
I've been raised by a family who's always encouraged me to find a job in something I love, and that's writing. You're right, this generation has a high-demand for tech savvy graduates, but I'd be happier submitting stories in the hopes of getting published over sitting behind a desk with a computer throwing errors that I don't understand at me.
PS: I'm still pursuing CS as a minor.

Sole purpose of college nowadays is to have credibility on your resume. Maybe in the past you could go to college because you wanted to be an overall well rounded individual and it opened a ton of doors but those days are long over. I like that your doing your passion and if you write a book, I would buy the shit out of it because I support authors and enjoy the fact they can weave a tale. Just saying its hard man nowadays.

As for your dream of becoming an author, I don't doubt you'll do well.
I think that a lot of people forget that a large part of success is in your mindset, and in how you approach your audience. You can succeed in almost anything so long as you set yourself apart from the crowd, while also finding an area of common appeal. Find a way to do that with your writing, and you should be set.
Good luck, dude.

A profound, wonderful cartoon from the early 80's. I tuned in every day to watch He-man say 'by the power of grayskull' and kick Skeletor's butt. One day I hope to meet him in person. 8¬)"
AKA Prince Adam, One of the Master's of the Universe. Transforms into He Man after saying "By the power of Grayskull...I have the power!!"
"Quickly, Destroy He Man before me ruin's my plans!" "

i currently own one and bought up a tin of 440 rounds, take it out every couple months and pump off about 20-40 rounds or so along with 25 12g rounds with the shotgun i own.
i love the nugget, and after watching the "iraqveteran" torture test video on youtube, i love it even more
the bolt can be a pain in the ass sometimes and it heats up a lot after the 40 rounds, but its just because not all of the cosmoline is out.
cleaning it is certainly a bitch, but its well worth my time, i love getting to spend time with that old rifle of mine.
