Finish your school at your parents house or try to get a small student apartment.
Even if you don't get along with them just avoid them as much as possible and act nice when you are around them.
After you have finished school you can get a good job and move out to a good house.

I got a laptop for school, and ended up spending a bit more than I would have for the same kind of specs in a desktop, but the portability is nice. Although, truth be told, it's not much more portable than a desktop. 10 pound 17.3 inch gaming laptop. Worth it, since I never have a problem with temperature.
I'm actually interested in getting a Surface Pro, a friend of mine got one and he draws on it all the time in class, although it feels like more of an accessory to me than a standalone machine.
One thing to think about with a desktop is upgradability. With most laptops, you're lucky if you can upgrade the RAM. While with a Desktop, you could spend 6-700 on something more basic, and add a beefy Graphics card or more ram later.
