I have to piggy back on your post because its what I tell my friends all the time. Saying birds are dinosaurs is entirely correct, BUT so is saying all mammals are reptiles. The problem with dinosaurs is that they don't fit into either birds or reptiles, they are an intermediary (sp?) group. In reality all life is a continuum and placing animals in groups like the Linnean system does is, imho, an outdated idea.

I like your way of thinking. But, I would place mammals with reptiles in the same way putting birds into dinosaurs. Why? Because there is little to no difference between a modern bird and a non-avian dinosaur, at least the theropod ones. Give Microraptor a beak and shorten its tail; you have a bird. Mammals and reptiles have completely different body functions, as in cold- vs warmblooded, the embryo starting point, milk vs no milk, etc.

But a Megalapteryx is more close in ancestry to a dinosaur; heap's close.
A blue jay? Bad example.

That is false. All birds that has ever lived are in the same family, they belong in the theropod dinosaur group, like Velociraptor and Tyrannosaurus. But as I said, it's hardly to best preserved dinosaur remain in that sense.

Dinosaurs as a whole constituted a range of body shapes and sizes. Same goes for their brains. While stegosaurs and sauropods (and others) had small brains, some were quite intelligent (on a relative scale). According to science our ancestors didn't start down the line to developing our present cognitive powers until after the dinosaurs. Therefore, the dinosaurs had just as much time (in fact a lot more time) to develop brains than we did.
